The dry powdered eggs that I bought from Augason Farms (on Amazon) a couple of months ago have now tripled in price ! I paid about $35 for the #10 can, and now it is $115, but on sale for $88 on Amazon. I looked through Amazon’s list of Auguson foods, and found some of them are on sale up to 50% off, so I ordered 5 more cans of foods that we can use if necessary. If a person is trying to stock up on supplies, this is a pretty good deal, and much cheaper than buying it direct from the company. One of the things that I noticed that Augason farms has is dehydrated spinach flakes. The reviews on them are all great, and it looks like people think it tastes like regular cooked spinach once it is rehydrated and cooked. These are freeze-dried; but I was thinking that I have all kinds of edible leaves right now (violets, clover, green bean leaves, Malabar spinach, and probably more), and what I am going to do is start picking some and dehydrating them. They won’t have the taste quality of the freeze-dried ones, but they should work fine to add into soups and stuff next winter when we are making soups and need greens for a pot of beans or pea soup , or whatever.
I have read about this too, @Yvonne Smith. There are all kinds of theories being passed around. I have read about contaminated vaccines and medication, some kind of virus being passed around, and, in the Kansas case, gasses leaking from the ground similar to the incidents that happened in Africa on several occasions over the years. I can't explain it, but I do find it disquieting, and I don't believe it is the heat.
Two things we had plenty of overseas were powered eggs, and instant potatoes which tasted like rolled wet news papers, and the eggs would turn green on your tray. Thank God for C- Rations, Ham and Butter Beans, Spaghetti & Sauce , Pound Cake. Unfortunately you could shine your boots with that tin of cheese yuck
Freeze dried foods have come a long way and can be quite good. You can check out the reviews. I totally agree with Yvonne's idea of drying any number of wild greens. Sour clover can a a bit of tang. purslane can too and help blood sugar problems, her clover, lambs quarters, cattails, burdock root and pith make the finest vegetable broth available with substantial magnesium. So much free food and vitamins.
Not so much a 'like' but I appreciate the info. When the lock downs started I was glad to find out what I needed, what was missing in my preps. The only thing I worry about is propane delivery. It is against my insurance policy but I have a very small, free standing, spare, wood stove at the farm I would like to put into our kitchen. Hubby's house has two working fireplaces with doors and electric fans but most of the heat actually goes up the chimney.
You could put a woodstove insert into at least one of the fireplaces. That would make a big difference.
For the last several years, I have belonged to kind of a food co-op, (https://bulknaturalfoods.com/), and we have ordered fresh produce like peaches, apples, and grapes from local sources; but they also sell all kinds of grains and other foods that a person might want to use for stocking up for emergencies. Usually, there are only a few people there, picking up their fresh fruit, and maybe a bag or so of wheat or other grain; but today, they had a huge U-haul truck, packed full with lots of big bags of grains, and the 5 gallon buckets, and other stuff that comes in smaller quantities. And the parking lot was full of customers getting their orders. They were using the furniture dolly to move the boxes and bags of food out to people’s vehicles, because so many people seemed to have ordered a whole lot of stuff this time. People are definitely stocking up and getting ready for a hard winter ahead !
I just got my weekly grocery delivery and I'm shocked at how much groceries have increased in price. I spent $170 and the only "meat" I bought was 2 pounds of Gulf shrimp and about 2 pounds of ground chuck. (Usually meats are the high-dollar items.) I don't buy cleaning stuff or paper products with my groceries, but I did buy an 18-pack of Corona beer. Six months ago I used to spend around $125 a week for groceries.
Just as when the COVID crap hit, my heart breaks for young families and those early in their careers. I was walking around Walmart this evening watching the overnight crew restocking shelves, and wondered how many of them knew what might be just around the corner. All of us here have lived through tough times, but I fear that none of us have seen what's coming. These people are having their lives stolen from them for no good reason.
Even in regular use, I use freeze-dried ingredients in soup from time to time, and there's nothing at all wrong with it.
OK and now the Senate has just passed a bill on to the President which includes more gun control although 'it doesn't sound so bad'. It includes a section to pay states to implement red flag laws and 'boy friend' laws. What states don't want to accept free money? Tell you states to work on NOT accepting. Make their own laws to uphold the Second Amendment!!! And enforce the laws already in place to keep us safe! States' rights are more important than ever! And the Supreme Court may just be realizing how important it is. Our Second Amendment is what will protect us from the World Economic Forum. The recent mass killings sounded like set ups to me to take guns from the law abiding. People knew of them beforehand and/or that the shooters were mentally damaged.
Speaking of ammunition, I just found out that a Czech holding company for strategic levels of defense weapons and ammo has bought the ammunition portion of Vista Outdoors for around 2 billion bucks. The American based company, Vista, manufactured several leading names in ammunition like Federal, Remington Ammunition, Hevi-shot and Speer and although the headquarters for those name brands will remain in the U.S., I’m a little skeptical as to what the end game will be and what countries the company will be selling ammo to. https://www.bloomberg.com/press-rel...siness-to-czechoslovak-group-for-1-91-billion
