Have you ever gone through Canada to Maine? Long time ago I did and it was interesting. Went through Niagra Falls New York, Vt...

When I am alone, I do. My wife isn't allowed in Canada and, for that matter, given that we're not vaccinated, I don't suppose either of us would be.

Here we are at a Comfort Inn in Portland, Maine, where we'll be for the night because my wife is a wuss and doesn't want to continue on for a few more hours to get home.

It ain't like you got a job you need to get back to. Any good restaurants out that way? (I just went on the web...you got lots of dining options.)

We just came from a Mexican restaurant that we like, and have been to several times over the past ten years. South Portland and Portland are common stops for us, but we've been gone a while now, and we could have been home by 7-8 pm.

The last bit, both ways, is unstressful. Once I got past Milwaukee, the rest of the trip to the UP was familiar and unstressful, as is the trip from this side of Boston to home. Besides the familiarity, there's generally not so much traffic either, although New Hampshire and Southern Maine were pretty busy today. Once I reach the ALL POINTS NORTH sign, though, I feel as if I am already home, although I still have a few hours to go.

Chicago was easy both ways, this trip. We didn't even have to slow down for Chicago on the way to the UP. On the way back, we got up early and went through between 6-7 am so there was some inbound traffic, but no stops and it wasn't too bad. Ohio was okay on the way back.

    Understood.

I've always pushed through, but I've not made such a trip in my latter years. My preference has always been for night driving because headlights and taillights are always easier to see than most vehicles are in the daytime...you don't have to triple-check to see if someone is beside you.

I used to prefer night driving and, as long as I am on a tollway or major highway, I still do. I can't see signs so well at night now, though, so I don't like driving in strange cities at night.

I've become light-sensitive, and out my way most of my driving is on rural roads with no street lights and only the occasional house light...and most houses are not at the street. So when a car comes the opposite direction in the pitch black, it might cause brief issues.

We got home a couple of hours ago. It may be a few hours before I get to any of the things I said I'd do though, because we're unpacking, doing laundry, and the cats are obsessing on me. I get it. I'd obsess over me too if I wasn't me.

In my youth I did a bit of long distance driving. But now I worry about everything. I have researched going through Chicago for my family reunion trip to Ohio numerous times since it has been a while since I have been through there. Maybe 20 years. I have decided to go around. It will add an hour and a half but the stress will be less. On the way back, I might go through because it will be night time and the traffic should be less. But who knows. Everyone has given up listening to me because I can't make up my mind.
I got a new phone and have been checking and rechecking the route. (and my maps)
The phone gps is quite surprising. I used to tell people NOT to used google when coming to my farm because they always ended up two towns away.
Now you can get close ups of intersections and stops...
And then, checking again, it was recommended that I take a different route because of a CRASH in Columbus today. A crash?!!!
I think I don't want to go again.
I will be gone maybe Sunday through Thursday if we decide we are stopping instead of going all the way through. Monday through Wednesday if I have my way. I come from a family that did not stop except for gas. Everyone's eyes turned yellow at one point or another.
My husband said he would really need to stop ocassionally for bodily functions. I was thinking, Hasn't he heard of intermittent fasting? But I told him, I was pretty sure there would be places to stop along the way. I think I can still sleep in a car. Him, not so much.
    Wish us luck.
I have to go look for our insurance cards and wills and...
