To be quite frank, I didn’t even know who the lady was until she got popped with trying to go through Russian customs with a bunch of hashish capsules for her vape unit.
I do not follow women’s basketball [or men’s either for that matter], nor do I follow rich athletes who follow in the footsteps of Colin Kaepenick.
Ya know….those athletes who got rich playing some game in the U.S. but yet hate the U.S. (I digress)

As the story goes, together with her team on Feb. 17, 2022, Brittney Griner went to Russia to play an exhibition game.
Whilst going through customs it was the 6’8” tall hooper (Brittney) who was caught carrying cartridges of hashish, an illegal substance, into the foreign country which prompted the authorities to throw her into a nice Russian jail cell.

After much ado and talk of prisoner exchanges, her pleas for the U.S. to somehow extricate her from Russian bondage went unanswered and on August 4th, 2022 she went before the judge for sentencing.
The short version is she was sentenced to 9 years in a Russian prison and has to pay 1 million Rubles to boot.

Epilogue: Griner is healthy and doing as well as can be expected and after 9 years in a Russian prison she will probably have a full working knowledge of the Russian language.
Who knows, maybe the Russians will decide to cut her a deal if she plays basketball for their women’s team.

Side note: It was suspected that Brittney Griner is trans by some in the U.S. media but the prison matrons in Russia assure us all that she is indeed a real she.

This is supposed to be Griner, and does not look female to me.

Boo hoo. People transporting drugs into a foreign country... what could possibly go wrong? Sorry, but I don't want any more tax dollars wasted on that. Enjoy your stay, Britney.

You R correct, he is not a woman and probably was not good enough to make basketball a career unless he could simply Say I am a woman ! A lot of that going on today but then too the guy must have smoked too much dope when he thought he could go thru a Russian check point with the dope in his bag, especially when his country was furnishing weapons that killed around 12,000 Russian soldiers involved in the war started by a Russian KGB chief. Makes one wonder just who really plays women's sports today, I still say the Crocodile Dundee gender test is the best.

There are several links that all refer to Brittney as a lesbian but then there’s the question of how her / his first wife bore twins unless of course, she might have been cheating on Griner.

One link was even so bold as to consider the possibility that Brittney is a hermaphrodite and has the male counterpart of hidden gonads that simply didn’t drop.

Dunno…….Maybe whichever population she’s placed in might reveal the truth but either way, she’s gonna have a long stay in a Russian prison.

My thoughts are: Russia is telling the U.S., without actually voicing it, "you sent the Ukraine money and arms/ammo to kill Russians and you expect us to do you a favor and send this person back to you? Sorry U.S., isn't going to happen."

She stated that it was a mistake done by her and she apologizes to Russian authorities, but they aren't believing anything she says about what happened.

Will have to see what happens. Both the WNBA, of which have excellent players, and the NBA, of which I followed all the way back to when Magic Johnson played for the Lakers as well as watching Phoenix Suns, Pistons and Bulls back then (years ago) say they are discussed with the verdict. But, just what can they do???

And, btw, very seldom will watch NBA now.

I understand she was sentenced to a work camp, not a prison, so she will go to the Siberian gulag with the other political prisoners who blatantly break the laws of the country. His/her sentence may be harsher than normal due to the war situation, but she/he was familiar with the laws of the country since she had spent a good deal of time there denouncing the U.S. She even demanded that the Anthem not be played at games in which he/she was playing.

Too bad those who come across our borders with drugs don't get the same thing.

    Well now, let’s see.
They can show solidarity with their wayward hash smoking WNBA member by doing what they have been doing for the last few years.
They can continue taking a knee when the National Anthem is being played.
They can keep making millions of dollars whilst hating the U.S. for all the disadvantages they have.
    They can keep smoking dope.
Although Griner isn’t on the same level of criminality as George Floyd, but maybe they can erect a monument in her / his honor and have Megan Rapinoe speak at the unveiling.

I KNOW ! Maybe they can all boycott Russian vodka ! That’l show ‘em!

In many US states, I don't know how many, possession of hashish is a felony, and it's illegal federally, so doing time for bringing it into a foreign country sounds reasonable to me.

It’s another one of those…dunno things.

Hashish is merely a concentration of oils derived from the bud of the cannabis plant and I think that those states which have legalized cannabis have also legalized the more potent concentrations and hybrids. At the present time there are 18 states that have legalized marijuana and another 19 have legalized medicinal cannabis and so far as the government goes, legalization has already passed the House. Side note: Since she always seems stoned, I’m sure Kamala Harris is all for it.

Now, no matter what the United States does in reference to the legalization of what I still call dope is one thing but every American citizen going abroad who has any sign of a living brain knows that dope in any form is probably illegal in every country in the world.
Even going to Mexico where the stuff is grown and sold, if an American gets caught it could cost a bundle to get out or possibly have a long sentence in a Mexican jail.

I guess being able to play a great game of basketball doesn’t necessarily qualify one to be called smart. Hopefully, the sentence that Griner got will knock some of the stupid out of him/her.

It's still illegal federally and in several states. Passing the House doesn't make it legal.

Here is the deal the way I understand it. Russia is famous lately for taking Americans (they are holding a ex member of our presidential security team) on trumped up or just plain false charges. They hope to trade for the Big Hitters we have, like the "lord of war" and others.
Now don't get me wrong, I could care very little if a person is stupid enough to try and transport drugs into russia and gets caught. But they school these pro players about these type situations . The education is there and it would take a major brain fart to over look or be unaware of hash oil.
    Just my 2cents
