American Motors, never heard of that one, but hubby said he has. Did they make Rambler too? I had a Rambler.
My mom's Plymouth Valiant had push button transmission. Very futuristic. Although sometimes it got stuck and I took the face plate off to re-align the buttons. My mother was very impressed with my mechanical ability That's about the only mechanical thing I ever did.
There were quite a few cars with those. I thought they were kinda neat. When we moved from Indiana to Virginia, we loaded up the wagon with parents and kids, filled it full of stuff, loaded up the travel trailer with crap and pets, and hit the road. While going up the mountains of Pennsylvania, a couple in a small red convertible (she was wearing a scarf) pulled alongside of us: "Your car is on fire!" It seems we pushed the transmission's buttons just a little too hard.
LOL!!!! You and I would have had fun together. I always wanted to put a V-8 in that station wagon to make a sleeper. But I tell you what they make in the real world...a mid-engine V-8 kit for Corvairs!!! You take out the back seat (such as it is) and drop a small block Chevy engine in there, right behind the driver's right shoulder. I don't know if the suspension gets beefed up, but the adjusted center of gravity must make it corner pretty good.
