Yeah, back in my younger days they might have become a chicken dumpling meal. Reminds me of my Uncle Joe bringing his expensive fighting rosters to Daddy and asking him if he would keep them for a little while because he was moving.
When finally came back for them, he ask Daddy where are my rosters, Daddy said they really tasted good Joe.

I';m setting up for the peeps which should be here Wednesday. We'll keep them in the living room for several weeks, I need to order paper towels foe their bedding and get out the heat lamp, waterer and feeder.

We lost two young hens to an owl yesterday. I am guessing an owl as the birds were killed and heads removed. Their bodies were torn up but essentially still intact. That is how owls have killed here in the past. They cannot carry an entire bird out of the pen, so they eat what they can and leave the rest.

Don sorry youy lost the hens, sometimes what got them is a real mystery, but you seem to know so at least there is that. All the ones we lost over the years have been a mystery except the biddies the snake got. We caught the snake with one. Still don't know how it managed to get thru the welded wire or rightly fitted doors of the brooder to them.

    Wisconsin.
We have a hatchery close by that I have emailed to see if I could just drive down to pick up chicks (they don't deal in pullets) but they don't get back to me. They seem to deal regularily with tractor supply, though.
As far as livestock goes, I can go to a local weekly auction but they can be tricky with regard to the health of the animals. I got my mature cow from ebay, of all places, years ago. Conversed with the seller and she was nearby. Not sure ebay sells livestock any more. I got my last heifer from craigslist.

When we got to the feed store, I went in and they had some more pretty little Rhode Island Reds for sale, had to tear myself away from them, so cute. When I got back outside I told Marie they have the prettiest little reds in there, she said don't even think about it. She likes the Barred Rocks best. There are great chics too.:)

The reds just finish the fight, not start it, leghorns are mean to each other, or at least the ones we had liked pecking out all tail feathers.
