I went on Craigslist to get examples of those ads I was talking about, but I don't see any for the complete On-Your-Site set up. I'd imagine it's a seasonal thing. I did find a couple of ads for equipment, and this one for queens: Queen honey bees - $30 (Pilot, VA) Open mated, marked and laying Queens from VSH Carniolan stock. Caged with attendants. Pick up in Floyd County VA. Or I can ship to you via USPS priority mail for additional $15 for up to 5 queens. In reading elsewhere, it seems that VSH queens (Varroa Sensitive Hygiene) are mite-resistant. The site I linked to has 3 different VSH species--VSH Italian (Allegro), VSH Carniolan (Spartan) and VSH Pol-line 2.2--and the business can cross-breed to your order. Here is a marked queen:
Thanks, Mary, just curious about when he wants to collect honey, and where or how will he keep the building from filling up with all the bees. I think I would do it outside, as the older people did. But I've never done it. Thinking about doing it though.
Thanks, John, That is neat, $45.00 for 5 queens, sounds like a good deal to me. In that photo you can clearly see their fingerprints, I know it's another story, how we all have them just differently. lol It's a clear photo of #28 there, It may be a seasonal thing, but as you said, I am not sure myself. I know a little about people keeping them after reading up on them, and what neighbors use to tell us. But learning fast with everyone's help here.
