We have had some 20+ cold nights here, and our banana plants are frozen and done for this year. Here is how they are looking today.
This is the banana plants this year, and looking back on this thread, I can see that they are much larger this year than last year, plus they had new babies this spring. I gave one to my daughter-in-law and she has it in a planter and is going to wait until next spring to put it out in her back yard. Fall seems to be arriving earlier this year than usual, after a really, really HOT summer, and I put the electric blanket on the bed yesterday, when it was not even October yet (quite). I am expecting that we could get our first frost later this month at the rate it is getting colder, so the banana plants might not make it until Thanksgiving this year before they get frozen and die for the winter.
Nice looking plants. Just a couple hours ago I was outside separating Aloe Vera plants to put out on the dirt road for people. No sense in them just dying when weather cools. I have at least 25 from large to saplings. Our banana plants have been doing ok till Leo came into front yard peeing on them.
We have had several nights of temps down in the 20’s (and more coming up this week), and the banana plants have frozen and are done for this year.
Thanks for reminding me of another job, I need to transplant my banana plants today. Or atleast cover them.
I’ll probably go out today and cut them down and leave about 6” of a stump above the ground. Next year, they will come back twice as large and tall as they were this year.
Ok thats sounds like a good idea, maybe I'll do the same. Our plants has 3 babies ' for a better word' beside it.
My first little banana plant shoot is popping up ! Each year they get larger, so I can hardly wait to see what we have this year. I noticed that a few cannas are now sprouting , too.
I bought an ornamental red banana plant. Not sure if these are as invasive as regular banana trees but I put it in a large pot just in case. (Pot is about 30" high.)
