I know there are a few posts about Postum beverage on the coffee thread, but I decided to start a new one. I don't believe I have ever tasted Postum, though my grandma and mother both had jars of it in their pantries. Recently I watched a youtube video where a woman made a Postum cake that she claimed has a flavor like caramel, so I decided to order a jar of Postum in my next grocery order. Are you familiar with Postum and do you drink it? I know it was developed as a coffee substitute back in the 30's or 40's, and that many Mormons drink it instead of coffee. (Interestingly, my mother was Mormon and she drank coffee all day long. Hmmmm.) There are also different "flavors" of Postum now, not just the original. For anyone interested in the Postum cake, here's the video and a link to the written recipe. Blog post with recipe... https://blindpigandtheacorn.com/postum-cake/
Back when I was a teenager, I joined the LDS church for a while, and I started drinking Postum. It is a coffee substitute made from grains and (I think) molasses. It used to be fairly inexpensive, but now costs a lot more. Post originally made it, hence the name, as their coffee substitute, but stopped sometime in the early 2000’s, and then sold it to a smaller company, who now markets it. Some people say it tastes just like the original, and some say it does not; so I guess that it is just a matter of taste. If you want something that resembles coffee (cream and sugar added), but is not going to keep you awake; you might enjoy it. I like the cake idea, too ! Here is an original thread about Postum that Frank Sanoica posted several years ago. http://www.seniorsonly.club/threads/mr-coffee-nerves-and-postum.10051/
Yvonne--I'll edit my first post if you'd like to move this to Frank's thread. For some reason I didn't find that one in my search. Sorry!
Franks thread was more about the ad than the Postum itself, and parts of it are way off topic anyway. This is a great thread, Beth !
I used to like Ovaltine; the chocolate flavor mixed with milk. I haven't had any since I was a kid, though.
I bought some Ovaltine a few years ago. It was still pretty good, but it's not something I think of while shopping. I don't think I've ever tried Postum, however.
I ordered some Postum in my grocery delivery for tomorrow. It cost $10.79 for 8 oz! Kinda pricey just to taste it.
Years ago I wanted a malt and there was no where to get one so I bought some Ovaltine and some vanilla ice cream and made my own. To think about it, Postum and ice cream might be a good mixture too!
I love Ovaltine. It's the best. I have tried Postum as an adult when looking for a coffee substitute. I'm not crazy about it, but it's hot and it's caffeine-free. I recall the ads from my childhood, but I don't recall it ever being around the house.
We had a little cabin down on our lake and mama boiled water for hot Ovaltine on a potbellied stove for us kids.
I tried Postum back in days of my high school History class. We were studying the war and I had a teacher that wanted to let us experience a little of the lifestyle of the time. I remember not liking it. Ick! I remember drinking Ovaltine as a kid. It wasn't bad.
