Is it possible to add a poster's location in the info under the avatar? Often when discussing things I wonder where the poster is located, so I go to their profile which may or may not show where they're from. (Such as a political discussion with posters in different countries, etc.) It could be as generic as "USA," "Canada", etc. or the person's town/state if they care to divulge.
Unfortunately, Beth, there are those that don't want their location publicly listed in a forum. There are some extremely private people out there.
There are times when I have wondered whether someone is from UK, US or somewhere else. Perhaps if there was something in our profiles so that we can 'choose whether or not' to have our ' Country' shown below our avatars ? That way - those who have some reason for not wanting anyone to know where they are can 'opt out' and those who don't mind can 'opt in'.
I totally agree with you, @Beth Gallagher , and I have seen some forums where that is listed, just as the basic country where they are from. I can’t see any reason why anyone would object to that, because it helps a lot when we are trying to discern what someone from a different country is trying to say. We have words for things like vegetables, other food dishes, and just a variety of things where we express ourself in different ways. It might depend on the forum software whether we can add this information in with the avatar stuff, but if @Ken Anderson can do it, I think that it would be a great idea and a help .
You have added it into your signature, @Kate Ellery . For a while, most of us were doing that, but not so much anymore. If Ken can’t add it into the avatar, we can ask people to put it in their signature, like you are doing.
I went in the Personal Details and filled in the Custom Title field with my location. I went from this: to this:
Looks like we can all do that ! And it is pretty simple to do for anyone. Of course, some people will have to give up their “Supreme Member” title to add in the location….
That would be why she added... I think there is a way to do that, but I don't want to try to set it up until I know that I have a period of time blocked out in case it results in a problem. Actually, I think it should be easy. We have some user profile fields intended for users to add a bunch of contact information, like Facebook, Twitter, Skype, ICQ, and so on. I didn't want to even give that option because that's just too much information for anyone to put out there. However, I think I can use one of those fields and rename it. Still, every now and then I come across something that I think will be easy, but which leads to a bunch of crap that sends me down a rabbit hole. I'll try to find some time to look into it either this weekend or next week, though. I think it's a good idea, and I hope that I can do that. It would, of course, be optional.
I don't find "Custom Title" under Personal Details. Can a normal user do that? Also, I don't think the "from" is necessary.
