@Gary O'Dan I recognize that avatar from the Homesteading and Country Living forum. Possibly another forum. I am the gal that lived in the mountains for 15 years and the early ones off the grid. I forget my name on that forum. Just an old edge of a rural town dweller now.

    Welcome O’Dan.

It’s interesting seeing two comments that folks moved from the wilderness fringes to the urban fringes. If it’s not prying too much, what was the motivation? Medical care closer, age just making it too difficult? I’m in an urban area now, would like to be further out but my wife has close connection to the medical community here and some family; my age is constantly reminding me of my shortcomings as well. I wish there was a way to accomplish it all.

Welcome @Gary O'Dan , and it is good to have you here …….. looks like you moved to the neighborhood where a bunch of your old-timer friends are at, that is always a good thing, and you will find more friends here, new and old.

I am a North Idaho transplant, now living in northern Alabama. What part of Oregon are you living in ?
Oregon is a beautiful state, and if I could live anywhere, it would be along the seaside somewhere near Astoria.

    One word;
    Redundancy
After six years of tending snow/ice 9 months outa the year, one loses that 'Look at all the pretty snow!' charm
And the challenge pretty much left me around the fourth year
Not that we had it all figured out
    There remained challenges
    Summer wildfires...smoke
    Winter ice/snow
    Fall ice/snow
    Spring ice/snow
One gets rather anxious to get just a glimpse of terra firma around June
Wind...blowing down the oversized lodge pole pine trees
    And......the chores
    Wood, water, fuel
I'll talk about it in length once I create a thread

    Age?
Don't know how old you are, but if you have the ability, age is not a factor

I built my shop in my lates 60s

Thanks, look forward to reading about it. I’ll be 75 in a few weeks. Hitting my 70s has really slowed me down. I was pretty slowed down anyway due to back problems.

I didn't seem to lose pace when I hit 70
But in town here, I'm feeling it at 73

    Ah, the back
My lower back would seize up about every 15-20 minutes when doing some heavy stuff
I learned to hang from a stout limb 'til it unkinked
    and
    pop a couple Tylenol

Gary, there are lots of "ex-SFs" here, and some who post on both. You'll begin to figure out who's who. :D
