Sheldon, sounds like you guys are having a rough time of it. The last time something like that happened to us, we just let the field drain, and we figured that everything was a loss, but it wasn't. Yes we lost our cash crops, but after a short time, we found that much of the seedings were just all jumbled up. We let the fields go as they would, and we were quite surprised when much of it survived the flooding. It was all mixed up, and we were not able to sell it, but it was the start of us offering a small local church the opportunity to pick our fields. We made some more friends, and the church had some fresh veggies for their pantry.
We too have been getting buckets of rain. My yard is going to be knee high before it drys up enough to be mowed. This year I have converted to planter so that I don't have to bend over to do my gardening. Here is a shot of my tomatoes.
Thankfully, the sun has broken through, and it's a beautiful day. I hope the sun dries the ground at least somewhat, because we've been having torrential rains, and there's been quite a bit of flooding in the area. The local police had to secure and relocate a gator that had strayed onto the road the other night, and a neighbor saw water moccasins swimming in the ditches at the edge of the road. There's more rain and storms in the forecast, so I might go out and clip my gardenias, before they get too waterlogged.
My area has not really had much rain this spring. It is still cool in the evenings, I hope by the end of the month I will be able to put what I plan to plant out in the yard.
We are getting rain this weekend; but so far, it has been just a nice slow and easy rain, and not a downpour. It is just what the ground needed. Even though I have been watering every day; some places the ground had still dried and cracked. Once it stops raining, the ground will be soft for me to dig again, and I can put some of the new starts outside, either in planters or along the fenceline if they are climbing ones. Bobby got me gardening tools for Mother's Day, and I want to get out there with my new pruners and clear off some of the vines growing over the back fence. I do like the honeysuckle vines; but some of them have just totally overgrown the fence and need to be pruned back a bit.
Drought??? I'm almost living in a boat. Our bayou is almost in my yard, and the bayous around here are very deep. I wish I had a kid to go treasure hunting up and down the bayous and rivers with. Kids have so much energy, and are so willing to jump into the quest.
All this talk of rain must cease immediately as it has influenced our weather and we now have wet and stormy weather
I think that it is a good thing that you don't have anyone to go out exploring the bayous with you, Ina. Diane lives near Houston, too, and she has reported alligators and water moccasins on roads and people's lawns. Alligators are fairly easy to spot; but those nasty little water moccasins can be pretty small and still do a lot of damage. Even in your little fenced in area, they could slither in, so be careful when working in the Fairy Garden and watch out for Izzy, too. When I lived in Missouri, I lost a goat, and I am pretty sure that the goat just went to get a drink from the pond, and a water moccasin bit him in the neck. One day, I was out moving the sprinkler, and a copperhead struck me in the ankle and I had to go to the hospital. My whole leg was swollen up for days, and I was pretty sick. It was NO fun at all ! !
I hear you Yvonne. So far so good. My thirteen y/o retriever, Amber, has killed many snakes in her lifetime. When I let her outside in the mornings, I see her trolling the area for critters. She is very protective of me, and I know she loves me, even when she has had to recover from the many bites she has received. I guess I was lucky all those years I took the boys out. But, after heavy rains was the best times to hunt for treasures that might float around. We were able to build a 30' X 30' tree house back in the '70's, it was like a little village up in the trees. All of it came from the San Jacinto river.
It rained all night again and is still raining. I told it to go your way Martin, but it paid me no heed.
