As I age, I just take what my body has nearly stopped producing; Melatonin. 10mg about 15 - 30 min. before bed and it’s a done deal. As the adage goes; one tears down muscle during training but we build muscle during sleep. I tear up a heckova lot of muscle when I train so I have to have the deepest sleep I can achieve during my rest period. Among other healing processes, during deep sleep HGH is produced and passed through the blood brain barrier so the deeper the sleep the better. It’s strange but normally the human body will keep producing what is being used and needed but melatonin isn’t one of those things.
I was just referring to the long days you have in summer and the long nights in winter and how they would affect you. I was unclear how much you could see, but I did understand you had some vision. Sorry if I offended.
We listen to talk radio too,it helps us not notice the tinitis aka ringing in ears as much. Also its takes mind off other things.
@Don Alaska No you didn’t offend me at all. I just wanted to clarify how much I can see. It may seem strange to some people that I can see some things as I’m registered legally blind. I’m writing about that in my personal diary. I don’t have problems sleeping as regards the difference between light summer nights and long winter nights. With good window blinds it’s always dark in the bedroom.
What's your source for melatonin? The aisles are full of supplements from different companies, but can you trust them?
My wife, thru her PCP, now has a prescription for TraZODone 50mg. Took one, whole one as prescribed, and got better sleep than she been getting. She requested something to help her sleep and he had no problem prescribing it for her. My VA Doctor prescribed the very same medication for me last Thursday when I met him. He told me to stop drinking water an hour or so before bedtime. The last week or so, I can’t count the number of times I had to urinate in the middle of the night. Then again, the hospital doctor told me to drink lots of water so I wouldn’t become dehydrated again, so, I was. Due to urinating so much at night, I was getting very, very little sleep. I haven’t taken my sleep aid medication yet, but it sure is tempting! I have gotten very tired of being up 3/4 of the night!
These days, I will sometimes take a couple Tylenol when my leg is really bothering me. They help some. I had some hydrocodone that lasted for a while after my spinal surgery and they helped a lot. I ran out of them a few years ago.
Ed--I occasionally use VitaFusion melatonin gummies; they work well for me. I take their vitamins, too. They are made in the USA and get good reviews.
I’m sorry Ed that it’s taken over two years to get back to you on that. I must have been asleep at the wheel. I’m pretty picky about some supplements but for melatonin, I’m good with whatever the Humana OTC free list has on stock at the time.
Asleep at the wheel? Must be the melatonin. I have since taken melatonin along with Tylonol PM and 1/2 alprazolam. The combination works except when I over-exercise such as grass cutting. It must have something to do with the production of stress hormones from exercise.
I know have mentioned before - but still have not slept All night since 2017! The meds do not help. I have no problem going to sleep. But due to Lasix, and another issue I am up many times during the night. No fluid after 6pm does not help either. Last night was up at 1pmish went to recliner, may have dozed off at some point, but dog wanted out of his pen for bathroom a 3 . Did not go back to sleep until 5:30 ..woke up at 7:30. I do not want another rx pill, so may try something naturally now. I wake up feeling rested 99 percent to f the time. Just really tired of not sleeping longer.
Strange. The normal progression of good exercise is the production of Serotonin, Dopamine and some neurotransmitters (e.g. endorphins) which should actually make you want to rest and even sleep. In my case, I take melatonin to reinforce what exercise already does but the deeper the sleep period is, the better. Whether by supplement or naturally produced, Arginine has to cross the blood brain barrier to trigger the pituitary into making GH (growth hormone) and that doesn’t happen until one passes REM and goes into a deep sleep. Now, Yvonne will take melatonin AND a Tylenol PM if she’s feeling ill which again, helps her body to heal during a deep sleep.
Nothing has worked for me to help me sleep. I guess I have been this way pretty much my whole life. I have tried a lot of things except prescription meds, which I won’t take. I have taken magnesium, melatonin, valerian, tart cherry juice, and chamomile tea and other things I’m sure that I can’t think of right now. I generally get some sleep after I haven't slept for 3 or 4 days. Then it is rinse repeat. I just try to roll with it. My hubs on the other hand, falls to sleep as soon as his head hits the pillow and sleeps like a hibernating bear….that snores!
I once had a whooshing sound in my ear, a side effect from prescribed painkillers for a shoulder injury, I was told to put cotton wool in the effected ear and I'd not notice it so much, it worked too!
I've never tried anything for sleeping specifically. I've taken Nyquil for cold symptoms a few times that always knocked me out quickly. But every time I'd wake up 2 hours later—wide awake. That was worse to me, so I never tried that stuff again.
