Seafood -- Is It Healthy?

    Jim, I've noticed after careful scrutiny, that much of the seafood offerings in Wally-World's frozen cases are all "Product of China", the reason for our questioning concern. I have refused to buy any, even though I eat the offerings at the buffets around here mindlessly.

    I love fish. Now, where in years past, I was very wary of fish, because of a terrible experience with a salmon bone which went into my gum, I have become complacent, sort of, and really would love to see labeling of seafoods marked, "Product of USA, no chicken-sh!t feed, no adulteratives".

    It is really terrible that fish, especially ocean fish, have gone from being one of the healthiest foods on the earth, to being so contaminated that it is almost not safe to eat them.
    Farmed fish, especially those from other countries, are worse, and the pictures of the rivers in China that are polluted and full of dead animal carcasses are enough to make a person not want to eat the fish.
    The ocean has so many important minerals, and the fish that live in the ocean would be excellent for us to eat, providing they came from areas where the water is not polluted.
    I do still eat seafood, and I try to get fish that are the wild-caught ones; but most of the time, those are a lot more expensive. Even the frozen fish are expensive.

    Living somewhere that you can go out and catch your own fish is probably the best answer; but that is not something that most people can do, or might even not want to do if they could do it.
    When I lived in Wetern Washington, we loved going fishing in some of the bays and inlets, especially around Olympia.
    There used to be a park where the creek came down and met the ocean water, and the tide would come in and out, and when the tide was in, we could catch all sorts of fish.
    When the tide went back out, we started one of the barbeques at the park and cooked and ate our fish. That was years ago, but it is one of those "good-time" memories that stay with you all of your life.

    @Yvonne Smith : The "bad" stuff contaminating seafood was decades ago was mainly inorganic like heavy metals, Mercury and the like. Only recently has it been widely revealed that, even before the heavy dumping of metals into the ocean (one of the worst and noteworthy was Mercury dumped off Japan from some industrial process) came to light, that the Endocrine-Disrupting synthetic organic chemicals, chiefly pesticides and herbicides, have become dispersed globally, world-wide. Those "Estrogen Mimicking" chemicals we need not fear as Seniours, for they chiefly will affect the current young generations, and more importantly, future generations. While they are collecting in all human bodies, the only effects to us old-timers may be extra hair growth for ladies, and puffy breasts for guys. No big deal. However, a few of them have been implicated as carcinogenic; those, which include the PCBs, Dioxin, and a couple of herbicides like Paraquat, WILL pose risk. Frank

    It has always been important to eat the healthful fruits and veggies that will clean the toxins out of our bodies, and now that we have so many of these toxins dispersed globally, as you mentioned @Frank Sanoica , it is even more important to be sure and eat foods that will help cleanse our bodies of these poisons.

    One of the best reasons to eat seafood is because of the iodine content. Iodine is used by every hormone-making gland in the body, and especially by the thyroid gland.
    Most people barely get enough iodine to prevent getting a goiter , and definitely do not get enough iodine for optimal needs of our body, which is one of the reason that cancers are becoming more prevalent in these areas.
    I love shrimp, and it is a wonderful source of iodine, so I try to include some in salads, or cooked with veggies, and usually have at least one of those little cans of salad shrimp each week. Shrimp is very expensive, so other than the little canned shrimp, we usually only buy it when it is on a really good sale.

    I still eat fish and other seafood when I can. I could go catch my own, which I used to do, but I don't like taking the hooks out or cleaning them. There are markets fairly close that sell fish and other seafood freshly caught in the Gulf of Mexico. It's been a while, but I have bought seafood there. I think seafood is probably about as healthy as anything these days, especially if it's locally caught, or caught somewhere with cleaner waters. I also try to avoid imported fish, especially from China.
