It was defaced with profanity and some of the rioters were shouting it symbolled racism and one even mounted it in mockery. Some danced around the fire as it burned. Yes, it was taken down after the damage, but it was damaged because the antifa thugs deemed it a racist symbol erected on stolen lands. The reason the bonfire was lit was to purposely damage it and make a statement that they were burning a symbol of fascism. Plans have been announced to put it back up this year, but nothing has happened yet to my knowledge. It had nothing to do with the elks organization or the race of its members. It was a statue on public property and that is all they needed to call it fascist. The cost of replacing a replica base, repairing the elk, and re-erecting it, is estimated at $2 million. The city council deemed it was not racist. There are no plans to rebuild the one they destroyed of Abraham Lincoln, also in Portland. Now back to the topic of Southern Genocide. I don’t know if you remember it but the Army was offering early outs in around ‘69 for guys who would sign on with the Washington, D.C. police or the Los Angeles police department. No thanks……
News was not real current as I remember. In 69 I was in my first year with the 121st and spent 2 years there. I do remember a lot of race trouble at times but the higher up didn't allow it to go on for long. It was always eastern instigators or the California bunch of draftees. Somehow a false story got out that the ratio of dying was of all black soldiers. It was a lie of course and the numbers were disclosed to disprove how wrong the lie was. The actual number of blacks served in Vietnam was extremely low compared with whites or Hispanics. Of course it is directly tied to the actual number of American Blacks in our population. Then there were few job titles available for draftees to begin with. If you did not receive a high school diploma you most likely would be assigned to cannon fodder duty. At different locations off post you had to be very careful going to some of those bars because Blacks had their own special owned clubs and those guys were really over the top. I always had my short barrel 45 tucked away just in case. I went to Vung Tau one weekend to take care of some finance and a Black Supply guy from the company was also going to Vung Tau so the two of us got there during the evening and the post was closed down, so you could not take care of any business or go off post. We hung around in an alley behind several mess halls all night not having any place to actually go to. Next morning we took care of our business and then went downtown and got a room at a nice little hotel. We started off hitting a couple bars and in the end we walked into one of those no whites bars and it was all black guys. They were ready to jump both of us and the friend calmed them down but we did not stay for a drink. The friend wanted to go somewhere he was familiar with so I gave him my 45 and I went back to the room and he had brought an M-60 and some ammo with him in a suitcase. So I woke up the next morning and he had never returned. It rained like crazy all night a regular storm. Around noon he showed up and told me he had got drunk in some little bar on the strip below the mountain and when he woke up at his table at the bar the water was up to his knees. We got all our stuff together and went back to Soc Trang. I always remember the trip. I have been at some crazy places and some nice hotels to boot. One of the best hotels was downtown Saigon near Tan Son Nhut and I am pretty sure it was named the Caravel. Well known to a lot of media people and civilians. I was up on the top floor where there was a dance hall and there was a long outside balcony where you could look out over the air base from a distance and the city.
We are all just people. That's it. Anything that divides us is a bad idea. People with freckles are not different than people without. People with red hair are not different than people with blond hair. People with darker skin are not different than people with lighter skin. And anyone who tells you different is playing at some game. Life is tough. Life is unfair. People are looking for someone to blame. But that is just an old game. Doesn't mean the ones getting pointed at are to blame. Just means the people pointing are angry at the difficulty of their own lives. We have Nobel Prizes winners of every skin color. We have Medal Of Honor winners of every skin color. Go all across the board of every human achievement...and people of every skin color are represented there.
