Summary: A 37 year old woman who has suffered from bouts of depression and hopelessness went into Vancouver Hospital seeking psychiatric assistance. She was told that there was a shortage of shrinks in their "broken system," and was asked "Have you considered MAiD?" (Medical Assistance in Dying.)

MAiD, has been available in Canada since 2016. It's reserved for adults with a serious and incurable illness or disability. Mental illnesses have been added to the criteria, but that change won't take effect until 2024.

Here's how the program has progressed so far:

Makes one wonder what the real stories behind those numbers are.

Yikes, she's only 37 and given this info. There is so much one can work with for depression and other mental health issues, but Canada being a social medicine country they don't go there for supports for people. very tragic. It's drugs or death is what I'm hearing here.

With all it's faults, the U.S.A. is the best country to work on one's life in many ways.

Thyroid is a major gland that is so overlooked for mental health issues and depression for certain. I know that one for 10 long years.

Not to derail my own topic on Post #3, but I was just reading an article on iodine deficiency in this nation. It seems that this is one thing you should see a specialist on before supplementing on your own...but it's the root cause of lots of maladies.

Now back on topic: I don't know enough about Canada to say one way or the other on how their systems address mental health issues. I tend to be supportive of such programs. They can be easily justified even on purely utilitarian/financial grounds (which is no way to view human lives.)

Regarding America: I agree that on the whole it's a good place to be. I'm sure none of us like the direction things are going, but we ain't hit bottom yet.

Iodine is critical and deficiency is rampant. Testing is a simple test. Fluoride pulls iodine out of the body and the industrialized countries are fluoridaed. A vicious cycle of ineffective supports for the people.....STUPID docs who do so much less now than ever.r... I've been supplementing with iodine for a long while and that reminds me, need to take a swig in my water. Yes, I did testing.

If you consume sea foods often, you could be ok but most don't. Some buy kelp sheets and chew them ... I went for the Iosol Iodine yrs ago.

I am Canadian but not even close to being a fan of"MAID".It's intentions were not designed for that type of situation.Whoever suggested it should have been fired.

Someone on Hitler's staff could have devised Canada's MAID program.
