https://www.dexerto.com/entertainme...hone-users-warned-of-nationwide-test-2270770/ This article says the alarm will go off for 30 MINUTES. Youtube has a conspiracist saying the government is trying to see if they can reach all people with devices as a means of control, since they can listen in to everything through our phones, already. Of course it would be good to be warned in times of emergencies. But I am thinking of insulating my phone to not have to put up with prolonged screeching. Imagine the car accidents with all the people who don't know about this in advance. I jump whenever an amber or grey alert goes off.
Yeah, that’s got to be a typo. We get those alerts now and then from the state of Maryland and they are loud, you can’t miss it. They use them in Maryland for Amber Alerts and certain emergency broadcasts.
I think they mean it will take FEMA 30 minutes to complete the test, from their end. Each phone will have only a one-minute-long message. It would probably be difficult to alert every phone in the country, all within a single one-minute period.
Here is the FEMA press release. Beginning at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET, cell towers will broadcast the test for approximately 30 minutes. During this time, WEA-compatible wireless phones that are switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and whose wireless provider participates in WEA, should be capable of receiving the test message. The EAS portion of the test is scheduled to last approximately one minute and will be conducted with the participation of radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers and wireline video providers. The test message will be similar to the regular monthly EAS test messages with which the public is familiar. It will state: “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 14:20 to 14:50 hours ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public.
I appreciate the heads-up. I had not heard of this, and I set up a reminder for that morning to not poop my britches when the test goes off. Maybe I'll try to be off the road at that time, just to be safe from the reactions of others.
Prepper channels are lighting up about this now. Some think the government will upload a tracking virus onto your phone during this "test". I think both Canada and the UK have done this same thing recently, and it seems strange. If they expect a nuclear attack due to the government actions in Ukraine or perhaps in the Pacific, I don't know what they expect people to do. Most Western nations no longer have any type of shelter, so it would just cause panic. Subways could be a little shelter, but not much, at least for long term. Dangers are everywhere. They apparently can turn your phone on remotely, so if you don't want to receive this "alert", you will have to either remove the battery (or let it run to dead), or put your phone into a Faraday apparatus such as perhaps a dead microwave or an aluminum pressure cooker that you don't use.
During COVID, I believe it was the state of Massachusetts that worked with Google to install the COVID Contact Tracking software on Android phones without the knowledge or permission of the phones' owners. So this is no longer the stuff of tin foil hats. Regarding nuclear attack: I was trained in elementary school to hide under furniture, so I'm prepared. Maybe the government should give everyone a desk.
Ah, but they would have moved you to a shelter after the initial attack, @John Brunner. Now those equipped shelters no longer exist in the West, but they do in China, Russia and on the Korean Peninsula. They may have even had Geiger counters or dosimeters available then too.
I lived within 10 miles of DC for nearly 50 years. All of the maps showed Washington as a target should we engage in Mutually Assured Destruction. I've commented here and elsewhere that if there's a bright flash of light on the horizon, I'm gonna run toward it. At least I'll be going against traffic

And at least I'd be going against traffic
There are excellent shelters for the government. Bazillions of dollars have been spent to build them and abandon many as they have been found out. John Brunner can go to the old one near him at that fancy hotel in W Virginia (?) New York is worthless at a target lately.
I forget about that. I'd give up my spot to Trump and die happy, knowing that those idiots would be locked up with him and have no escape.
Yeah, there are shelters for "continuity if government", which means the politicians and bureaucrats are set, but why alert the public nationwide unless it is simply to incite panic?
