Cleaning out the fridge this morning and was trying to decide what really needs to be in fridge. How are you storing these items, mustards, ketchups, pickles ? i keep reading these items do not need the fridge but on the product it says to. I put my in fridge only because I was always told to and of course it is suggested on the product. I do not put these in fridge tomatoes- unless cut , potatoes, onions those are the mail ones. I was shocked to find out that eggs if fresh -like your own chickens laid them, do not need fridge. So how do you store these items? Something i do use is StillTasty.comhttps://www.stilltasty.com/ Dang guess I could have looked on this site..but still interested in how you store.
Yes, I store all those things including the eggs in the fridge particularly because some of them may not get used up for some time and if not stored there I would have to find someplace else handy to keep them. The adjacent dry storage shelf being already packed and having little remaining space it is that one that really needs that 'cleaning out' I am thinking that it could be a bit scary digging to the back of that one...... Wooops.....another for that 'to do' list that never gets done!
We too usually store that stuff in the fridge, but eggs (especially farm-raised and not washed) don't need it and I think North Americans are the only ones who do store eggs refrigerated. Mustard is basically vinegar and mustard seed--not much to go bad, but ketchup has sugar in it, so it would be the most likely to spoil. Of course rules changes with climate, so in homes with no A/C, or in houses with no central heat, storage times and methods might be different.
I store all of my condiments in the fridge, regardless of what the label says. The deal with fresh eggs (unwashed as @Don Alaska said) is that they have the "bloom" on them. It's the final coating added right as the egg is being laid. It covers the pores so that bacteria and outside gases cannot enter the egg. Commercially sold eggs are washed before they go to the store, thus removing the protective bloom...so they gotta be refrigerated. That being said, I get fresh eggs and always refrigerate them...although they are out at room temp where I buy them. And they're not washed: I use that site all of the time. I have a bunch of items loaded in a spreadsheet with their storage times & tips that I copied from Still Tasty...I seem to forget easily.
@John Brunner - ditto on eggs, did not know that until we moved here and get fresh eggs from niece. I still put in fridge unwashed until i get ready to use that carton.
Am trying a new way to tally grocery list before buying. Was looking up Owens sausage at Walmart- totally gone from their site along with the Kentucky Legend ham. WTHeck? Not happy, will look anyway cone Wed, when we do to Dodge City.
Are you saying they're out of stock, or are you saying it looks like that stuff is discontinued? Kentucky Legend Ham is in stock at my local Walmart, but Owens does not come up in a search of any of the regional Walmarts...but I have no idea if they ever sold it here in the first place.
totally not on their website at our store. also seeing lots of new brands, You were eating the Ham at one time, were you getting it somewhere else? Our small store in town was carrying the ham but not for last month.
Thursday, we went to Sam’s Club since we had to drive way down there anyway for Bobby’s eye doctor appointment. He was out of the Amish Blue Cheese that we always buy from Sam’s and we wanted to get more, since we seldom drive that far away from home nowdays. They didn’t have any on the shelves, and the guy working in the area said it showed as low in stock and not being re-ordered. When we got home, I checked the other Sam’s Club store website, and they do not even show blue cheese or blue cheese dressing on their website; so this is apparently something that is being discontinued. It seems like every time I order from Walmart, they are out of something simple that should be in stock, like bananas, cauliflower, or even whole wheat bread. And something’s, like a jar of olives, they want to ship to me and not deliver, when you know that Walmart has to have olives on the shelves.
I'm with you, Don Roles. I keep vegetables, from the store, in the fridge until they are dried out and brown, or liquified or fuzzy often because they are in the drawers or shoved to the back and forgotten. I do clean out the fridge but not often. Maple syrup can get a mold 'cap' on occasion. You just gently put a butter knife into it at the edge and then lift it out. It will not poison you or hurt the flavor. It has happened to ours --bought or home made. I have cut the mold off of some cheeses and used it. Hubby and I fight over refrigerating butter. I like it soft. He worries it will go rancid. It will if you leave it out for months not days. I have lots of very old spices. I just use more in the recipe. My oldest daughter knows this and is a gourmet. So, while visiting she threw out a tin she knew I had from when she was a child. IT WAS MY MOTHER'S! If I must wash an egg because it is dirty with something questionable, I drop it into a grapefruit seed extract solution as a natural disinfectant. Meat and leftovers are always refrigerated or frozen.
Ah Mary, (have not figured out how the @ thingy woks yet) Now I dont feel so bad in that this old fellow is not totally a lost cause! As for cheese it rarely get to that point as a vegetarian it disappears from the fridge pretty quick but 'throw out cheese because its got a little mold on it, hell that is called for on some cheeses! Sorry to say I switched to margarine many years ago simply for the simplicity of being able to take from fridge to sandwich without a fight, like yourself I do not get hyper about 'out pf date food' those best before dates are just to cover the suppliers arse ; just in case. That said I just sent two cases of Chicken Noodle and the like from waay back home with my daughter as being a vegetarian and my wife having passed almost 4 years ago now and my son apparently not 'into' soup it was just sitting there gathering years! BUT even as a vegetarian I am careful of meat left overs to fridge that I feed my son which given his appetite and tolerance for my cooling is generally not much....
There have been shipping issues nationwide, but Walmart seems to be reducing its inventory. They no longer carry most of the "prepper Foods" in large cans and I understand they have stopped carrying a number of other things. Beef is in increasing short supply and will get worse, but chicken and pork seem to be okay in most places. Seafood is spotty, as I have heard of it being plentiful some places (like here) but short or unavailable in other locations. We are kinda at the "end of the supply chain" so life is different here, as your daughter in Palmer has probably told you.
My Walmart website shows Kentucky Legend Ham as being in stock. There is no trace of Owens sausage on the websites of Walmart, Food Lion or Kroger at all.
