When I researched freezer placement, I read that freezers are most efficient at 50 F. They lose efficiency as we move away from that in either direction. I thought the same and considered placing a freezer outside. We used to have a "freezer box" on the deck where stuff could be kept all winter frozen. We no longer have that since our food storage has reduced with no kids and no dogs at home.
uh oh, too late I have an insulating blanket on it, anyway. Well, the little one is in the basement. Mostly for daughter's taxidermy stuff. But it seems I lose efficiency on the stairs.
Not sure if this belongs in this but here goes. About a week ago I decided to get the shortest haircut I've ever had. After sitting in The Barbers chair he asked me how would you like it cut I pulled out a cell phone with a picture from the internet that I saved of a model with a cut that was really short, I said take your machine and cut it down about the height in the picture, he asked me if I wanted the number two or number three. I had no idea what he was talking about, he soon realize that and put an attachment on his shaver and took a little off the side of my head, showed it in the mirror to me I said a little longer than that he changed the shaver head to a number three which I found out later is equivalent to Three eighths of an inch. I've always had my hair long enough to have a part on the right side. As a kid I've never had a crew cut or any cut that was as low as this one. There were two reasons for me getting the shortcut, one was my scalp was extremely dry I wanted to be able to treat it without hair in the way. I found a cream for extremely dry skin with all the vitamins in it (A,C,E), I'll see how it works. The other reason was I want to look beyond the hair line for skin marks. For about 2 years now I've had a mark on my forehead that occasionally bleeds that I think might be skin cancer, another one showed up about 6 months ago just below the hairline, I just wanted to check if it were any others. So far I haven't seen any others. Also I think it would also be easier if I should ever go to a dermatologist to check my head. I guess my rant is the amount of people who've done a double Take seeing me with this short hair. A few probably think i'm losing it, others are chuckling inside. None have asked why I did it And I won't volunteer any information unless they do ask. I always found it interesting people's reaction to changes, Some can't even look me in the Eye, But I do catch them staring when I'm not looking their way. Thinking about it now, this could turn out to be a lot of fun, As a prior bird watcher i'm going to now be a People watcher.
Depending on where I was living, I'd have my hair longer in the winter and shorter in the summer. And, shorter or longer, I'd always color my mustache/temples with Just For Men Hair Color. Been doing that since meeting my wife in 2000 and more gray hair showing up in those two areas.
I kind of did the same thing with my hair being longer or shorter depending on the season. I like it shorten in the summer but it was long enough to comb. I don't have to comb it now, but I forget every morning I run to the mirror to comb it. I went from having the longest hair I ever had, almost reached my shoulders (I was lazy) to the shortest hair I have had. Maybe a shaved head next? Haha
Taxifornia Power Pushers Working on This One -- I've lived in CA and in this beach area for 52 yrs, 5 yrs in San Jose. Never had A/C in the 52 yrs a fan now and then when a heat wave would hit us. Just hearing the Tax Pigs are now talking about mandating those who live in the areas where I live that A/C will be pushed on us. No way in Hell here. Those scumbags sit on their taxed butts and think of ways to "get more from the people".....
Perhaps they are trying to collapse the grid there for some reason. Electric cars and mandated A/C...sounds like trouble brewing.
When you take an item to Antiques Roadshow for an appraisal, don't talk over the guy who's explaining things you know nothing about.
I read a plea for blood at an upcoming blood drive. It said that blood supplies were extremely low. One of the collection sites was at the town library so I thought a good deed was to be done. The last time I tried to donate blood, I was stopped at the entrance to a medical bus and asked my vax status. Not if I had covid. When I told them I wasn't vaxxed, they said I could not donate. So I went home. Now I went to the library and was met by a nice woman who asked if I was familiar with the 'new rapid resonse info' ???? I was handed about ten sheets of paper to read while I was waiting. Two or three of them had to do with my AIDs exposure, medication, precautions. A couple had to do with my sex life. Then came the info on using blood for research--not to help individuals in need. It stated that one of the research companies was Pfizer and that we would receive no compensation if this was where our blood ended up. Then it stated that if we did not consent to the use by research, we could not donate ?????? I am perfectly healthy, just old, but I left with all my bodily fluids. The paperwork had then stated our personal info would be safe and encrypted with numbers before being submitted for who knows what. But they would have my dna and covid history, not including mrna, and could just retrieve the info with creativity. I was signing a paper; they were not. I am grumpy.
One of the things that kinda bugs me about giving blood is that the blood is gotten free and then sold. I may get the satisfaction of giving but there’s a lot of frustration attached to that. Nevada used to have a program whereby once a donor has given 5-6 pints over a couple of years, should that person ever need blood, the blood is free of charge for life. I do not know if that program still exists but to me, it was a good way to promote more giving whilst providing a form of insurance for potential need in the future. Plasma centers, on the other hand, actually provide people with some additional income. A person can give up to 3 times a week and they get paid around $75 cash each time. There is a questionnaire to fill out and they do check the blood to see if there are any infections going on and it takes about 2 hours per session (plus the wait time) but at least the money can be used to feed a family for a couple of days or a tank of gas.
Spooky! Was this a Red Cross site or a Community Blood Center site? If it was neither, it was a scam by Big Pharma to do research on you without paying you for it. I wouldn't participate in it EVER!
Technically, the blood itself isn't sold, but there is a charge for the processing which is very extensive these days. If there is a reputable plasma center in you vicinity, it can be a good source of income for you if you have a needed antibody or other factor that is needed for some reason. I stopped giving blood a number of years (decades) ago when it dawned on my that my donated blood was almost never used for patient care. I am AB positive, so my red cells can only routinely be given to AB positive patients. AB positive patients can also be treated with ANY OTHER BLOOD TYPE, so many hospital blood banks do not even stock that blood type since they can use A, B, or O. My blood was simply given to reagent manufacturers or used for other purposes. AB plasma or platelet concentrates are very desirable however, so if you are of that type and there is an apheresis center near you...and you are patient enough to donate in that way, the world would thank you. Unfortunately, our closest is in Anchorage and I am not willing to drive that far only to give away my body fluids and several hours of my time. This would not be at a plasma center, which draws for research and reagent production, but at a regular blood donation center and you would not be paid for those donations.
My daughter pointed out that she thought of donating plasma at my suggestion. The thought of them taking blood out was ok but the thought of them putting it back in was not. Why can't they just use whole cells too?
The first one was a church drive that I can't remember who was doing the draw. This last one was the Red Cross.
A person should only donate whole blood in intervals of about 110 days or so or 3 times a year. With plasma, a person can give it up 3 times a week. There are 4 or 5 things doctors do with plasma including some cosmetic applications that can cost a patient upward of $3000 or so per treatment so there’s gold in the plasma industry.
