Question: I have been receiving pop ups that say that my laptop has hacker threats. Now, assuming that a hacker has gotten inside my laptop, AND has seen my bank online password, is that enough for him/her to take money out of my account ? I mean, I doubt I could get money out of my bank account unless I had my debit card with me. The only other thing I occasionally do is buy something from Amazon.
If the password gives access to your bank account, then it can be compromised. Change your password and DON'T click on any of those popups.
It's hard to tell because, often, those kinds of pop-ups are there to trick you into buying some security package that you don't need or as an upsell from your antivirus program. I quit using one antivirus program because, although it was probably doing its job, it kept popping things up, trying to upsell me into a more expensive package. They could also be trying to get you to reveal personal information that would allow someone to access your stuff.
I don't know much , but I do know not to give out any personal information online. And I don't click on those pop ups.
Times sure have changed. I remember the first pop ups I used to receive were pictures of naked 'Russian' women for brides and offers to make me larger. I didn't click on those either. And after a while they stopped. Later, The scarey ones were a whole flashing page with an intermittent siren, like on a submarine, warning my computer was compromised and not to shut it off. I shut it off. and the compromise went away.
i am like you---richard whiting----i dont know much about my chrome tablet---i have one of those vp on one of the forums i go in and they wont let me in ---they say it is spam
It was common for older forum software to default to not allowing VPNs because, at the time, it was mostly scammers, or people trying to get back into a forum after being banned, who were using them. Also, at that time, most VPN IPs were from either Russia or China. Today, a large percentage of Internet users use VPNs, so most forums no longer use that option.
