I absolutely refuse to have anything to do with programs or computers which store data in the 'cloud' or with software that wont operate unless you are 'om line'. Perhaps this arises from my rural location where until recently internet access was unreliable and even now is slow by modern standards, I can however do everything including compose emails without being 'on line' and only need to connect when sending or needing to do stuff like this!
Can you imagine using a computer that gives all of the data to Google to store? And that won't even let you use it unless you are connected to Google? It is insanity.
Exactly my point with the Chromebooks, @John Brunner. I sometimes store stuff on the cloud as a backup, but I would never use it as my primary data storage. One of the things I wanted (and couldn't get shipped here) was a laptop with a lot of onboard storage in solid-state, so I wouldn't rely on cloud storage. I like to have total control of my data, or as much as possible.
I don't think so. Washington D.D. does seem to know we are part of the U.S. although many merchants do not. I think it is mostly shipping batteries by air that is the problem.
I was paid to sit on a mock jury for a case where a baggage handler was injured because a passenger packed butane to use to melt ski wax. (The guy and his lawyer were at this event trying to figure out the best way to package his plight.) I guess the rapid pressure changes made it explode. Good thing it failed after landing. One would think they can find a way to package batteries for air transport.
The planes themselves have batteries, and once you get them, you can carry them in your luggage. I don't completely get it, but they did have a few explode early in the lithium battery craze and EVs are exploding everywhere in transit.
I don't think so, but the temperature might have something to do with it. Cargo planes are usually pressurized and heated, but perhaps not to the extent that passenger aircraft are. The initial battery problems on aircraft were in or near the cockpit I think, so that would have been warmed and pressurized. I think most of the small battery problems have been remedies, but the regulations lag behind and usually err on the side of safety.
I wanted for my needs and "simple life" but more and more advacements make me run away from it more..... And there is a large number of folks who NEVER wandered into the tech world...and they are just fine.
