I guess. I doubt that they called to wish me Merry Christmas.

Probably a new thing concerning that latest Amazon order you made that is coming from China. They’re probably telling you that the boat sank and your order will be slightly late.

    or…..
I’d be looking out my back door wondering if the FBI was going to show up because you got a call from Communist China.

    Re: My truck.

I picked it up Friday. All seemed to be OK. I bought my friend who drove me there lunch and then drove home with no issue.

Today I took my trash to the drop-off place and went to my friend's greenhouse, where I lingered longer than I planned. I got in my truck to drive home and the headlights do not work. This is a blessing in disguise. I never drive it at night, and would not have known these did not work until my next inspection. And that would have been another sizeable diagnostics bill, since it's not fuses or bulbs.

    Back to the dealership...

By the time they’re done milking you, you’re going to have to sell some plasma just to put gas in the truck.

Well, last time they charged me $250 for a $750 repair, although I still think I've funded their company Christmas Party. I don't expect there to be a charge on this one, unless...

I bought my own headlight switch from EBay a while ago because I thought the old one was having issues, but I could not figure out how to take the dashboard trim apart to install it. So as long as it was in the shop for this other stuff, I had them do it. They also inspected my truck, so the headlights were working at that time. I don't know if they installed my headlight switch before or after they inspected it. So I don't know if the "customer supplied part" is gonna enter into the conversation or not.

At least my truck should get one. I think they've bonded.

    re: My Truck XVII

I took my truck in this morning and they looked at it right away to see if it was an easy fix. It was. One of the headlight relays was missing. The only explanation (since they had inspected my truck while it was in for repairs and the lights worked then) is that someone pulled that relay (or relays) for subsequent diagnostics and did not plug that one back in. The mechanic had some kicking around (spare parts from others' repairs???) and plugged it in. Things seem to be fine now.

The only remaining item is the door switch that turns on the dome light when you open the door. The driver's side is not working, and they were gonna switch the one from the passenger side but the wiring is corroded. The problem is that in my truck the radio does not turn off with the key until it then sees the door open and close, so with that broken switch it's possible to turn off my truck, walk away from it, and have the radio continue to play if I forget to manually turn it off. I went on the web to order the switch and install it myself, and decided that I should also replace the spark plugs & wires before they give me troubles.

I then discovered that pre-cut wire sets are not available for many vehicles and I gotta buy the raw cable and connectors and make them myself. I can do that, but don't know how much wire I need to make a set. I popped the hood on my truck to make some rough measurements, and cannot find the spark plugs!! There is so much plastic crap and shields and covers, I can't even tell which side of the motor they are on. I'll either buy a Chilton's or I'll go on the web and see what I can find (but info on this particular vehicle is pretty scarce.) Or I'll just start to remove plastic shields until I find what I'm looking for.

As far as missing relays, are you sure you took the truck to a mechanic and not a vet to get fixed? https://youtube.com/shorts/sPsw6mzZ68M?si=hQmDksY3_tMOYPv2

The vehicles today are built to make you return to the dealer for repairs. My guess is if you try to remove those covers/shields you are probably going to need a special tool.

Here's how long it's been since I've done any of my own repairs...

I found a video explaining how to change the spark plugs. The first thing you have to do is remove the coil pak from each cylinder to get to the plug underneath. I knew that each cylinder had its own coil, but did not realize that the coil pak sat on top of each spark plug; therefore, there are no spark plug wires. That's why I could not find a set of plug wires listed for my vehicle.

I'm glad I didn't ask anyone at the dealer or the auto parts store. At least I don't have to worry about getting the firing order wrong.

edit to add: You are right about the special tool, Von. The guy in the vid had a clip removal tool to get one of the covers off.

@John Brunner I am thinking you should just shop for a nice 1975 model truck on Facebook marketplace. It might save you the hassle of trips to the dealership
