Instant Coffee, Yes Or No?

    I am moving more and more towards drinking instant, but not just for coffee. Since I am usually only drinking one cup first thing in the morning, and then going to the Chicoraya instant instead, sometimes I make the brewed cup of coffee and sometimes, I use instant coffee instead.
    I found a new chicory blend, made in France and it has raw cocoa added into it , and I ordered some to try that.
    I have been adding the raw cocoa into my chicory drink for evenings, so I am looking forward to trying the new blend when it gets here this weekend.

    I eagerly await your review, Yvonne. I see it's 20% cocoa. That's a lot more than I've been putting in my drinks. Maybe I should up the volume to see how it tastes.

    I usually put in a spoon of the chicory and a little over half spoon of the cocoa, @John Brunner , so mine is over the 20% that it says for the new chicory drink. It might or might not need more cocoa in it.
    I am finding that instant coffee tastes fine to me most mornings, too, even the plain old Maxwell House instant coffee.
    For me now, simple is good…..

    I haven’t had instant coffee in decades. I seem to remember Taster’s Choice not being too bad but it’s been so long I’m not sure what I’d think now. Usually we drink pressure brewed coffee from our espresso machine but we packed it up for the move a few weeks ago. Since then we’ve been relying on k-cups or French press. We prefer pressure brewed over any other method but French press makes a good cup. Oh, and our one attempt at brewing Turkish coffee went very well and it tasted great but it’s just too much trouble. So, for the past decades, no instant.

    Same here. Even in a power outage, I'll boil water on my gas stove and pour it through ground coffee in a filter into a carafe...I'll not have instant.

    You’re kinda pushin’ it ain’t ya John? First you tell everyone you’re getting calls from China and next you’re making sure the government knows about your gas stove.

    Anyway, the worst recollection I have about instant coffee is way back in 68-69 in the C-rat boxes.
    Note: The recollection still sticks when trying to choose instant coffee*.

    We got a packet of instant coffee which was added to 1/3 or so of a canteen of water. Generally cold.
    We got a packet of sugar that HAD to be added to the coffee because it was so bad.
    We got a packet of chicklets to clean our mouths out after drinking the instant coffee.
    We also got a pack of toilet paper and a 4 pack of cigarettes to use whilst having a bad case of green apple quick steps after drinking the coffee.

    -Fossil fuels are also solar, to any right-thinking person.

    I've not had instant coffee since the early 70s when living with my father. He managed G.C.Murphy stores and just about lived at the place, so while he had a jar of instant around, his brewed caffeine needs were met at the snack counter in the store When I moved in, I soon bought a Farberware percolator. I cannot imagine field-ready freeze dried coffee made by the low bidder.

    Of all companies, Coca-Cola provided the instant coffee packets for C-rats.
    It was probably the break they needed to get into the coffee industry because now, they own several coffee outlets with the most recent buy of Costa Coffee.

    That's interesting. If you can tolerate the Fed being in your shorts (and if they like you, it's low-risk), getting a large contract like that is a great way to break into a new line of business. It might be low-profit, but you can leverage the volume in other markets.

    I usually keep a small jar of instant coffee in my pantry for "emergencies" and occasional recipes. I think the last jar I bought was when the Covid madness was at full swing, so it's probably a solid mass in the jar by now.

    To me, a Keurig k-cup can't be beat for convenience and a pretty consistently good cup of coffee.

    I had an x-mother-in-law who used to put a 1/2 pound or so of coffee into a gallon of water and cook it to reduce it to a syrup of sorts.
    After some arduous straining, she’d store the goop in her refrigerator and when she wanted a cup of coffee, she’d just add a teaspoon of her reduction into a cup of hot water.
    I guess it was her version of instant coffee.
    Truthfully, I was never really tempted to ask for a cup because generally speaking, I didn’t want to be around her long enough to drink a cup so I have no idea what it tasted like.
    *Note: Long visits =‘d shots of bourbon, not coffee.

    My NuCaf chicory/cocoa arrived today and I am having my first cup of it ………. It is DELICIOUS ! I used about a teaspoonful in my 17 oz mug, so probably could have used a little more, but I wanted to test it first and see how much to use.
    You can really taste the deep chocolate flavor from the cocoa content, maybe even more than my Chicoraya/cocoa mix, and the chocolate aftertaste lingers.
    Bobby (a dedicated black columbian coffee drinker) tasted a little of the granules on his finger, and he even said it was good, not that he is likely to ever drink any, but he DID say it tastes good.

    It is more expensive than the Chicoraya, so I will probably not indulge once this jar is gone, but I think that you would find it worth trying, too, @John Brunner .

    I also ordered more of the Four Sigmatic packets that have the mushrooms in them. I have been adding part of a packet of the cocoa one to my coffee and liked it, but these are just regular coffee (no cocoa) plus mushroom extracts.

    Interesting. I may add one to my next Amazon order. Using chicory to stretch my morning coffee and as a substitute later in the day has cut my coffee consumption to 1/8th - 1/4th of what it was, so I can afford to splurge.

    I gotta buy another 6 cup canning jar for my brewed chicory...I just shattered mine while cleaning it. Daggone stone under-mount sinks...
