-7 F. this morning and clear. A day ago, snow and warming was predicted for today, but the opposite happened. We are in a strange weather situation with systems coming both from the southeast and the southwest. Some were predicting 10 feet of snow or more for the mountains in the southeast part of Alaska. If it happens, I guess the glaciers everyone worries about are getting a boost.
Quick start up your truck! Down here it is nice and toasty. 50 degrees tomorrow! today was 40's. Hope I don't end up with skating rinks in the driveways when it gets cold again this weekend. I just rotated my tires but that won't be enough for glare ice.
Do you not use snow tires up there, @Mary Stetler ? When I lived in north Idaho and had my little Mazda pickup, I put on 4 studded snow tires each winter, plus some heavy weight over the back axle, and drove as carefully as possible. I had some bad hills to navigate going to work and back home, and sometimes had to leave early in the morning before the snow plow came by. I had no way to plow my driveway, so when we had a lot of snow coming, I left the truck out by the road and walked home up the driveway.
Studded tires are frowned upon here as they eat up the roads which are terrible enough already. We used to use snow tires but now use all weather tires which are tiny compared to back in the good old days. My car has little clearance so I mostly just steal hubby's old Volvo in bad weather because it is awd and has truck clearance. I just feel badly putting him out sometimes.
My wife's car has studded tires, but my old truck just plugs along in 4-wheel when I need it. I also have 400 pounds of gravel over the back axle.
