The Ice Capades was what I liked most, dark and cold inside but so nice in the summer time since few commercial places were air conditioned. Even downtown Houston in the mid 60s still had many buildings not air conditioned and they had those very tall windows which was the only fresh air they had. So it was easy to spot one of those old buildings simply looking at the windows and knowing it was not air conditioned. People would actually sit on the window sills several stories up just to cool off.

I’ve was taken to the circus as a child but only once, I think. As adults we have taken our kids and grandkids to the circus several times buying tickets for all so they could have the experience of going as a big extended family. There were elephants and horses and big cats, dog acts, etc. That wasn’t so long ago, it just seems like another life, as everything pre-pandemic does.

When the circus arrived here the elephants were unloaded and walked, holding the tail of the elephant in front of each one to the auditorium where the performance was held. Barnum and Bailey is touring this year but I’m not sure if they came to my state or not. I’m past it now. It was such fun taking the whole family with grandkids, even the ones who lived out of town came.

Today’s kids won’t miss the animals, having never seen them, but I would.

It’s kind of embarrassing but I cannot remember. It seems a lot of my childhood memories are no more.

I never went as a child. As an adult I did not like the thought of making the animals work like that very much. I don't like country fairs either, mostly because of the hawkers/barkers? I did like the rides until they became so expensive to not be worth it.
I did like the B &B circus museum in Florida.

Isn't it rather funny how people will talk about how much fun they had at a circus, without considering the horrible abuse animals are forced to endure.
    Just like rodeos.

There again, your opinion about rodeos, but definitely not everyone's. All rodeo organizations have a huge fan base, so I never really worry about what you and others think. And, the big/major rodeos across America keep going on, so.........

I hate watching horse racing for the same reason. What some consider entertainment is a mystery to me.

When there are those that were never raised on a farm or ranch, they will, most likely, never understand. Everyone has their "likes and dislikes" about everything. We aren't into Show Jumping, but there are equestrian events, such as Cutting and Reining, that we do like watching. To us, it's great watching a great Cutting horse or Reining horse in an arena, but that is us.

Those cutting horses LOVE what they do, and will often do something similar when out in the pasture if there is a cow or goat around. back when she was growing up, my daughter and her half-Arab pony, Precious, used to herd the goats around in the pasture, and once Precious learned what they were doing, all Robin had to do was sit there and hang on and let her pony have fun herding the goats around .
It is similar to a Border Collie, or other herding dog, it just comes natural to them to do it.

Popularity doesn't make something right. Many inhuman activities are popular.

Very good point! However, just because you don't like something, doesn't mean all of America feels the same way. They don't. National Western Stock Show & Rodeo (Denver, CO) as well as the Fort Worth Texas Livestock Show & Rodeo are coming up and both haul in the fans. And, after that, it's Houston and San Antonio. These are big/major rodeos that literally thousands attend. Sorry, but that's just the way it is and rodeo will never be stopped.
