Potato seeds are interesting. They have stabilized the seeds of a few varieties, so it makes it easier to do and you know what you are getting. If you save your own, you never know what will grow. Are you as successful with the Earthboxes as you are with the Aerogardens?
Don, I see your Danial Boone quote, Jakes mother is from his ancestry a few generations back.5th great uncle. Today I have to figure out where to put all the sunflowers seedlings ,now about 6 inches tall.
I have tried and tried to grow sunflowers because i love them; but when I plant the seeds, the squirrels come along and dig them up, even when I tried hiding them under my irises. The squirrels dug up all. Of my irises, too ! So then, I tried doing seedlings in a place where squirrels could not get to the seeds and that worked, but when I transplanted the seedlings, they didn’t grow well. How do you do yours when you transplant, @Marie Mallery ?
This will be the first transplanting them from seedlings, ,so don't know yet, but today I have to decide where to put them in the soil. No telling how it will turn out, wish us luck Yvonne.
Jake made my decision for me, he wants to put them all in the greenhouse he just rebuilt. Thats a good idea yet peat is low so that means heavy mostly sandy clay pots. Still better to put them in greenhouse in case od occasional hard freeze. Old trees will just have to make it awhile longer with the killing vines. We started cutting trails to get to them, yet we also need to cut back vines near fence around garden. At least Jaske got a pole saw now its easier to clear. Jake also cleared the weeds from hugulkulture pile last week. It looks really good but I need to cover it with some cardboard to kill the weed roots. Have to wash a couple of pasty butt hens today too. We need some youngblood. Another song
We transplant sunflowers every year, @Yvonne Smith. My preferred method is to use soil blocks, but if you don't want to go to that trouble, you can use peat pots or paper pots or something similar. Don't plant them too early as the shock is greater the larger the seedling and don't disturb the roots if you can avoid it.
Yvonne--several people on the AG forum have started sunflowers in their Aerogarden, then transplanted the little plants outside. You might try that; at least the seeds will be safe from the squirrels!!
It wouldn't be a chore for me. Wilds birds, chickens and grandchildren all love sunflower seeds. The remainder can be composted.
Well, I got mine but they are just sitting in my hot little hands, mostly, till April. The tomatoes and others are up. My elcampane actually are up!!! Very excited that they will live. I know just where they are going.
My seeds are finally coming today. Also, the weatherman has predicted that we have had our last hard freeze for the year so I will be able to put out an early garden. I have a bunch of little seedlings in my seed trays that will be ready to weather off in a couple of weeks.
Knowing where they are going is a good start, I'm still wondering where the giant sunflowers are going, thinking maybe over the septic field. It is a large area.
