Remember Kate Smith? How about Mahelia Jackson My Country Tis of Thee? As I was growing up these songs was played on television and radio. It will always stir up patriotic feelings then and now.
Magnificent! I have to admit that even with all our faults and failures, my heart swells and I get misty eyed when I see our flag unfold and hear that music. ♫I'm proud to be an American♫ ♫Where at least I know I'm free♫ ♫I'd like to thank those Americans♫ ♫Who gave that right to me♫
The people here have well suited orchestra and check out the people, Lords and princes, the 3 Ts, tiaras, ties and tux all quietly watching this old hippie woman,' looking like she is lacking in the social graces' sing this song. I'll still go with Leon Russel doing the better job on the song.
This performance was at the Nobel Prize Ceremony, 2016, in which Bob Dylan won his award. Patti Smith froze after the first verse of the song, apologized and asked them to start over. Glad you posted this, because I had never heard of Patti Smith before. It's been an interesting diversion to read a little about her. Complete performance unedited (starts again at 1:45).
Thank you for the info Nancy, I'd just think she may want to be a little more presentable performing for the Ritz.
Many performers have their image. It's something that makes you remember them. For some it's a made up image. For some it's the way they really are. Willie Nelson comes to mind.
Willie was a great example, and he can also sing and wrote great songs. Thanks for reminding me what a cat I can be.
Not catty at all. I used to think the same way. It just dawned on me one day why some performers don't conform. I think Willie still wears a suit to fancy occasions.
Any hint of patriotism is frowned on these days. We are supposed to consider ourselves citizens of the world, not a particular country. Another area where we must stand up for what is right. One of the main reasons why so many of us voted to leave the E.U. is because we were losing our identity. Many of the other Europeans feel the same way. This is why it is so vital to keep alive the culture of each individual country. Each of the countries which make up the United Kingdom has its own history and traditional songs. My generation was taught all of this, but now it's been phased out. I think it's all very sad. A whole heritage is being destroyed.
