I don't know what @Bobby Cole means. The Founders set the Senate to be elected by the state legislators, but out forebears in their "wisdom" decoded to do away with that system and make it more like the House at the same time they instituted the Federal Reserve and the Income Tax. Changing how the Senate was elected essentially did away with the 9th and 10th amendments in the Bill of Rights. Doing away with the Electoral College would mean the president would be elected by the majority popular vote, so small states would be ignored, and, as Bobby said, it would turn into a dictatorship..
That’s pretty much the direction I was going but with a “what if” slant to it. I.E. Similar to a Presidential election, what if there was a method by which the majority Didn’t rule in Congress ? Answer: It’ll never happen so I need to quit dreaming.
Good afternoon to all- I see some interesting opinions and comments here concerning the role "Majority" plays in our government. I don't say these comments are logical or legal or in any way common sense, but put that all to one side. I always found from my studies- and I assure you, I have done some considerable studies on this topic- our system of government could be summed up in one simple sentence. The minority must be heard, but the majority must prevail. Simple, and through the years, quite effective. And not accepting majority rule or hoping for anything other than majority rule is dangerous and probably fatal to our country This doesn't mean an individual has to like the majority ruling in specific cases- there are lots of examples when I thought the majority has been wrong, but then it's up to the minority to keep talking and pushing until the majority changes. And I for one am VERY glad that this round of elections is over- no more " real conservative" politicians trying to out tRump one another- at least for a while. you all be safe and keep well- Ed
Democrats and progressive Republicans would love to do away with the Electoral College as that would clear the way for a firm rule by the elite forever, and there would be no real point in voting.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I "assumed" that by "Congressional voting," @Bobby Cole was referring to the actual voting by congress on bills/legislation (as opposed to congressional elections.) I know very well how the Electoral College works and I have no interest in seeing it done away with.
Okay, I think I have it. You want Congress run like Constitutional Conventions where each state gets one vote? That is why those who believe in the "Convention of States" think they can control what happens. Is that what you want @Bobby Cole? Presumably, that was intended to be somewhat how the Senate was to operate. The House was intended to be a "house of cats", with each person representing their own district.
I just wanted to put in my 2 cents on Nikki's speech where she said it's up to Trump to bring in his own supporters, but she failed to mention she'd endorse him?? My take on her attitude in what she said was a jab at Trump like, she's not about to endorse him or send "her" people over to him because of the huge Hillary-like chip on her shoulder. She wants Trump to "beg" for the support and she can dream on about that. He opened the door to any of her folks that want to join in uniting the country now, and that's right and proper, the way he always welcomes people in. So nikki, you lost, and you've followed hillary in your attitude, I'm just surprised you didn't have to be escorted out crying and go home to your bottle deserting your supporters like hillary. I guess she just sneaked out, I exaggerated
Whatever she might say, which would be far too late for it to have any meaning, I have no doubt she'll be voting for the Democrat in the general election.
I predict you are right Ken. I think she'll go with anyone she thinks can possibly put her in the WH. She started losing from the beginning, and to me, the fact she didn't get out of the race sooner, was more about "caring less" about the country she was running for, not the people.
Pretty much. Much of what was intended isn’t the reality of today’s system. To be sure, even the vote for the Presidency wasn’t supposed to be anything like it is today in as much as there is nowhere in the Constitution that says that the citizens have any rights in that arena. Initially, the citizens would vote for their representatives and it was the House that voted for the guy who would sit in the cat bird seat. Of course, back then there could be two parties represented as Pres and Vice which will never happen again. 200 years can really do a number on what was intended.
With emphasis on the first part (a warning) of the conversation between Vivek and Megyn, there’s a lot to take in but well worth the watch. Even with Super Tuesday now at a close and Biden taking those primaries, I too have been concerned about the possibility that it will NOT be a Biden/Trump election but some slip-in the DNC has well prepared to take Biden’s place in the general election.
