Legislating against Anti-Semitism may halt many incidents of the hate crime, but unfortunately, it can never stop the hate itself, because the perpetrators can't go to jail for what they're thinking. Hal
Agreed, but that doesn't mean we should have to accept it from legislators. Except perhaps that the Jews have a longer history of being hated, anti-semitism isn't any different than racism or any other type of bigotry. If we want to pretend that we are a free people, then we have the right to opinions that offend people. That doesn't mean that others have to accept these opinions, and it shouldn't mean that there will be no social repercussions, but they should not come from government. Offensive thoughts cannot be illegal in a free society.
Legislating against Anti-Semitism may halt many incidents of the hate crime, but unfortunately, it can never stop the hate itself, because the perpetrators can't go to jail for what they're thinking. They go to jail for acting on what they're thinking. I can't imagine where the hate for Jews comes from. These high schoolers they keep showing on the news - they must be clueless about who Hitler was, how many Jews he ordered murdered. If they know this, it's hard to imagine how they became so disturbed at such a young age. If you violently attack someone or murder them, the prison sentence should be the same regardless of who the victim is, and lengthy. Prison sentences vary wildly from state to state and from race to race. The courts need to get better at carrying out justice for all.
I just heard that Columbia University may be shutting down and conducting all classes virtually due to riots and threats against Jewish students on campus. Is this true? Speaker Mike Johnson is supposedly going to the campus today to discuss the issue. Interesting that no one from the Administration is going. There are rumors that the CCP is behind much of the unrest and is financing the protests by paying the students' tuition via non-profits. Does anyone, especially those who live in New York City, have information on this? Is this true @Lulu Moppet ?
Personally, I'm for Israel, although that doesn't mean I agree with all jews. Some are very radical and liberal like in all religions and races. But to have their life threatened by others is not free speech but it is threats.
I don’t live in NYC but this has been all over the news for days. It has some unusual elements because Columbia U is on private property and for reasons I don’t really understand they can refuse NYPD access. The pro-Hamas crowd has taken it over, erected tents, threatened Jewish students, etc. I read that they have gone to online classes. Ilhan Omar’s daughter was arrested (maybe off-campus, not sure) and the Squad is having tantrums. I hope someone from NYC comes along.
Many of them aren't even citizens and even if they are they should go to jail for threats to others. The longer this evil goes on the more radical and violent they will get. Ironic, that the majority of Jews vote for these freaks. I bet lots of them voted for ' the squad'. Nothing makes sense anymore.
Good evening yo all- I don't trust the news and information about the present conflict in Gaza and other places- no matter the source. it's hard to judge right and wrong in this sort of conflict- different people wanting different nations of their own- and all in the same territory. As far as Arabs and Israel go, I have to base my opinion on my experiences with the foreign exchange students I knew in college. One Israeli .friend was one of the best men I've ever known- solid in every way. The kids from Iran, Iraq and other Arab nations- rich kids, driving their sports cars on the sidewalks and generally being stupid. Based on this very limited personal experience, I know where my support lies. And I really don't know where a good source of reliable information on the Mideast situation is. you all be safe and keep well- Ed
OMG! I can't believe that I "Liked" something that @Ed Marsh posted! He must be changing for the better. Next thing you know, he will say something good about President tRump.
I doubt that. But with regard to the Jews, from Israel or where ever. Why does everyone hate them? They are just people, mostly good but, of course, some bad. And like everyone, I think it is the leadership that is lacking, but in control, directing countries to do stupid things, for the most part, for the sake of enrichment, as opposed to the good of the people. Rich dumb kids are from all over.
Probably not, but most people will agree on something eventually as long as they are willing to keep talking.
Teachers used to teach history using facts, not politics. The Middle East has a long history and it isn’t hard to find. People our age have lived through much of the modern parts of it. Some take a hint when one side is the only democracy in the Middle East and the other side supports terrorist groups. Gaza is governed by Hamas which is funded and trained by Iran. It’s also good to remember that there was peace last fall until Hamas crossed the Israeli border and slaughtered civilians. They still hold Israeli hostages. People who don’t want a fight don’t start one. Edited to change Palestine to Gaza.
These demonstrations being labeled antisemitism are really anti-geneocide of Palestinians in Gaza. Over 30 thousand killed with many being non-combatants like women and children is what these demonstrations are really about. The media was once called "the Jewish controlled" media but fell out of favor, but it's actuality hasn't changed, so they are biased in Israel's favor.
