My daughter makes hats like that to keep black flies and mosquitoes away from her head. sometimes from wild grapevines. Yup we are weird but we don't carry mirrors.
I've heard of people sticking a feather straight up in the back of their hats so the gnats & skeeters would hover around the tip of it and away from the wearer.
