I live in an apartment and don't think a 23 foot antenna would do me much good. Oh, I see now, these those stick along the wall of ceiling type. I just think getting my HAM licence might work better, it's just I can't get into the Zoom classes idea, yet anyway @Don Alaska
Look for an amateur radio club in your area. You should be able to find them on Facebook. If you cannot find a local club, try these folks: https://www.ncdxc.org/
I suspect that many, many "Technician" licensees rarely expand beyond factory-built UHF and VHF radios. Adequate UHF antennas can be and usually are pretty small. But all of that depends on your intended usage scenarios. People active in the hobby can advise you more specifically.
Rides on the cellular network, basically a sort of digital cell phone (LTE) device. Probably won't work where LTE service isn't available. Unique sort of thing, but probably not really SHTF or serious emergency communication. Doesn't mean they can't be useful in normal times. "Free" 1st year, then you have to buy new SIM cards each year about $4/month right now. Also seem to work only within a group of these devices, predefined at purchase. No idea how that can be altered after purchase. Unlikely to work connecting between arbitrary units in the network, but maybe. Also likely to be dependent on a central server routing the digitized voice packets between units.
Just an FYI for people. FB sends you hundreds of people they want you to add as a friend *BUT* when you try to friend someone on your own, you get this message: " Can't Send Request It looks like you may not know this person. Send requests to people you know personally to see their updates on Facebook." Chances are if I know people personally, they are already my friend.
Well, we live in an apartment for now. So, no survivalist communications in general. I'd be the one waving my arms out the window!
Then there were the zombie/cultists surviving germ warfare in The Omega Man. Fully mobile, just intolerant of the sun and bright lights.
