This is the Australian Scam Watch site, they send me an update me every so often about the latest SCAM … I received this warning message this morning on the latest SCAM doing the rounds in Australia https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/news-alerts/scam-alert-nasc-impersonation-scammers NASC impersonation scammers Criminals are calling people and pretending to be from the National Anti-Scam Centre. They tell you that your phone number is being used in a scam in China and offer to help you ‘clear your record’. These scammers work hard to get your trust, then try to steal your money and personal information. Hang up on unexpected callers who say they’re investigating a scam. It's probably a scam: the National Anti-Scam Centre will never ask for money or personal or financial information. How to spot the scam This scam can be hard to spot because scammers can make a call look like it’s from a legitimate number. However, the National Anti-Scam Centre will never ask you for money, financial or personal information, or threaten you. Anyone calling and behaving like this is probably a criminal. Hang up immediately and report the scam. How the scam works Someone calls you saying they’re from the National Anti-Scam Centre. The phone call looks like it comes from a legitimate phone number belonging to a trusted organisation, like the government or police. They say they’re investigating a phone number registered in your name that’s being used in a scam in China. These criminals may tell you they work with the Chinese Anti-Scam Centre or Chinese police, and say they will help you ‘clear your record’. They ask you questions to 'confirm you're not involved' in the scam. They may spend a lot of time with you, building your trust. These criminals will try to threaten you to steal your money, financial and personal information.
There is a scam phone call going around now from an (833) area code. Caller ID = Healthcare My iPhone normally picks up on scam numbers, but not this one.
I don't give out my cell phone number only my landline and it is not smart. All calls can be screened by my voicemail.
I had a call from Healthcare too. I don’t normally answer my phone, but I had just gotten back from going to a new doctor’s visit. I wasn’t thinking and I answered the phone, which I rarely do. The caller said, hello, is this “krystal”. I said who is calling? Again…Is this “Krystal”? Then he just went into his message. This is Aetna and we would like to set up a video visit and then-- I hung up on him and blocked the number. About a week later, I got another call and my caller ID showed it was Healthcare. No voicemail. I blocked that number too.
I'm going through a scheduling issue with a gastroenterologist I only see every 5 years, and almost picked up the call because I was expecting them to contact me. The buggers should rot in Hell.
We have a home phone but never answer it ,we only have it because it came with our NBN internet . It’s got to the stage it’s not worth answering our mobile phone number unless we know who’s calling .
We only give out our home phone number if asked and it has an answering machine on it so it can screen our calls. If a smart phone is required, it is not worth it.
Wow, I may have said this before, but if I get a call 99.9% of the time- it a friend, family or place I do business with. We both have Scam Shield free version that t came with phones thru TMobile and Metro PCS. You can have calls sent to voice mail, block them, in fact unless the call is in my Contacts list, seldom does it ring. We love this feature and maybe you should check it out. https://www.t-mobile.com/benefits/scam-shield
We have that with our T-mobile account also, and it really helps to screen out unwanted calls. When they go straight to voicemail, a scam caller usually hangs up eventually when they realize no one is answering, and if it is a legitimate caller, they usually leave a message for me. Our Apple iPhone has that protection as well, so we are pretty well secure from scammers as long as it it turned on. Bobby sometimes gets calls from people that he does not know the number, so he does not always have his spam-blocker on, and he gets more of those calls than i do.
How do you block scammers on iPhone @Yvonne Smith I put the number on block after they’ve called me, or in the case of text use the feature ‘ delete and report as scam “ The biggest issue we face is that most scam calls come from 08 code which is South Australia’s code Or the 07 code which is Queensland I completely ignore them the move the number to spam. Im aware scams can make it appear they are calling from a 08 code but may be actually calling from the Phillipines . I seen on 60 min of a recent bust on people making calls in Cebu in the Phillipines , I actually felt for the scammers getting sucked in by the criminals to do this type of work , however I have a DIL from there so know how poor people are so they grab a $$$ where they can ….. so they may or may not have been aware they were actually scamming people
