Between 1998 & 2000 I had three attacks the first two were minor, The last one put me in a hospital where I got very close to surgery. My side was swollen, They put me on iv Antibiotics for one night, Said if it didn't work.I'd have surgery the next day. Fortunately , it worked my swelling was gone I was feeling better, I was released the next day. Months afterwards , I had a GI series, to This day I have no clue why, I guess they wanted to see The condition of the divertic. They tell me, they stop counting after they reached forty pockets. Now this is gonna sound crazy, but my Doctor who.By the way, was a nuclear physicist besides being a Doctor,a Brilliant man, Tells me a story of a person who had an infected Appendix When they examined it they found a fingernail, The person was a nail-biter. Now I can't understand how this can happen, But supposedly it was based on a true event. Having three attacks over two year period, To be safe , I stopped eating anything with seeds, had daily fiber, Kept fluid in me etc. Then the light bulb went on I was a heavy nail biter back then, Who occasionally swallowed. I stopped biting my nails Right after the last episode in 2000, And haven't had a attack till 2 years ago were had a minor one. So I went from 3 attacks in 2 years to 22 years without one. Mind over mad?, Coincidence? Whatever it was, It worked. Now When I feel the pulling in my left side, I make minor changes to my diet for a few days or until it goes away.
That's interesting. I can see how a sharp nail would not get digested and cut you. "They" changed their minds on nuts & seeds aggravating diverticulitis. When I got a colonoscopy in 2013 or so and they discovered pockets, the doctor gave me a brochure saying that seeds & nuts were OK to eat. The general consensus is to eat enough fiber to prevent constipation, which puts pressure on the colon. But the only time I got constipated was when the diverticulitis inflammation blocked my colon. Much of the advice smells like conjecture. I'm glad yours is under control, and hope that mine stays that way, too.
Yes, that same Doctor did tell me they'd never found a seed in any of pockets of anybody who was infected. However I do find if I eat too many nuts. They may not get stuck in the pocket. But they do cause irritation going through, thats what I believe, So I don't fill up on them.I'll eat a few at a time.
For those with Diverticulitis - are you prescribed antibiotics for the inflammation? A daughter is having horrbile time with this and the dr keeps giving antibiotics, third go around and still cant get rid of. They tried doing a colonscopy and could not finish. Dr told her if not cleared up this time will send to surgeon. Also for her to only eat raw veggies... she cant do not teeth issues. All ideas appreciated.
In my opinion raw vegetables if you have an infection is not good, they are to irritating especially things like raw peppers the skin hard to digest and is very irritating. Sometimes you can feel an infection starting by a slight pulling on your left side, when I get that I change my diet I might even go a day with just Jello and ices, this gives it a chance to heal. Raw vegetables/fiber are good in moderation when you don't have a flare up, it keeps the bowels moving. Constipation can also cause flare ups. You have to watch your diet any foods that are hard to digest like corn or nuts eat moderately. A lot of doctors will not recommend a colonoscopy especially right after a flare-up you can puncture through the diverticula. Everybody's different what may help me may not be good for you that's why I say it's an opinion.
My one and only attack was pretty mild...I was constipated from it. Then I got a CT Scan and all hell broke loose. I was in real pain, I presume from the barium contrast drink going through me. I had one course of antibiotics that did not clear it up, so my doctor put me on a second course of double the dosage. At Walmart, they don't give you the reams of paper that normally come with scripts, you talk to a pharmacist before they cut loose with the drugs. When she looked at the dosage, she just stared at me and did not know what to say. I explained that it was an intestinal/colon infection and there had to be a high dosage going in so there was some antibiotic left when it got to that spot. (I had a colon infection once before and got mega-doses of two different antibiotics, which included cipro.) That's horrible they could not finish your daughter's colonoscopy. I wonder why they would do surgery instead of hospitalization with an antibiotic IV (but I am not a medical professional.)
This morning started off with a bang, putting away a large Pyrex cup, I dropped it and it shattered into million pieces some of them smaller than a grain of rice. I was putting it away stacking it under some smaller cups when I dropped it. I put the dogs outside till I cleaned up the mess. My wife tells me that our grandkids are having a ball at the Badlands, especially feeding the prairie dogs. They say it's beautiful there that I would really like it, the only way I'll ever see that is a documentary on TV. For the most part they said the food was great, there was only one place where they ordered a ribeye steak sandwich where the meat had a lot of Grizzle and fat. They're enjoying that area so much there staying an extra day. I don't know when they'll be leaving for Mount Rushmore. We're expecting tropical storm Debbie here sometimes today I can see the wind is picking up. Just hope we don't lose power. Supposed to have early afternoon thunderstorms. I have a few errands to run so I want to get out early before any rain comes.
I've done that a couple of times recently. It's tough to make sure you got all the slivers, and I don't wear shoes (or slippers) inside. I installed a deep double sink made of stone when I moved in. I wish I had not done that. It's like washing dishes in concrete.
I find that after sweeping/vacuuming up broken glass, it works well to damp mop the entire area as well. Tiny shards will adhere to the mop so be careful when rinsing it out. (I have one of those spin bucket mops so I don't have to manually wring out a mop.)
Good idea. I know they got one of those spinny mop's somewheres, If not maybe I can wet a swifter. I've been keeping the dogs out of the area. It was a three or four cup pyrex measuring cup That broke, I use it When I make eggs for myself because of my back pain I don't do it on the stove.I use the microwave for the sunny side up or scrambled.
I think I'm doing pretty good. They've been gone over a week. This is the first accident I had. What's good about it?It forces me to try using some of the appliances like the dishwasher that I never used before.Took me an hour to figure out how to get it go on. I don't Like lighting the gas oven, So I have been relying on the toaster oven or microwave to make my meals, I will use the stove top.Like I did to make the pasta.
Received a call from my wife a little while ago, She said they are at Deadwood that was there next stop, She said never saw so many motorcycles, I forgot It's the yearly Sturgis Motorcycle rally. I hope they'll be able to find accommodations and food. This might be interesting.
