The U.S. Army is moving a small number of troops and a small missile battery to an Air Force station at the far reaches of the Aleutians. I have no idea of what the thinking is behind this. Clinton decommissioned the Adak Naval Station as the Soviet Union died, since we didn't need those bases any longer, but it was a much more substantial base than the remote end of the Aleutian chain. There are no naval bases left in Alaska, but we have more coastline than the rest of the country combined. Reactivating Adak and establishing a presence near Nome are being considered, but I don't think seriously. Attack subs cruise around here, and anti-submarine warfare was what Adak was for during the Cold War after WWII. Clinton shut down Adak and turned of the Pacific submarine monitoring network because he though we didn't need it any more. He was in the pocket of the Chinese even then and probably didn't want to impede their progress.
