Here's some things of interest, My neighbor says she saw several dead raccoons against the curb on the street over from us. I believe the new neighbor across the alley has been picking off raccoons at night this past week. I've heard a couple of shots on different nights. He has children that he let's play outside at night or when it's dark. There is a spotlight so they can see when playing and Mom is there with them. I haven't heard any sounds of distress so I guess he has a pretty good aim.
Guilt, nah. I am only hoping that this is happening and maybe if I hear a raccoon in distress and a second 'shot to take it out' will I know for sure.
It's the norm around here and someone usually calls the police but nothing ever happens because no one ever sees anything or knows anything just hears everything.
It's the same for me out here in the sticks, but probably for different reasons. At least your neighbor can get rid of the critters the most effective way possible and no one's gonna bother him. Maybe you can sweet-talk him into doing a safari in the property next door.
