John my main concern is purity. So many moving here, and all water is from springs, bottling company's are pumping out millions of gallons a day, sold all over the world. Plus floods now and then. Lowing the level and increasing possible contaminations. When I was 15 my mother, aunt and I all got hepatitis from our well. Either fecal or animal fell and rotted. I've never been so sick, fever kept us in ice baths, doctor said nothing they can do. It almost killed Aunt. I don't want to risk it again.
So you either have an artesian well (right at the surface) or a bored well (shallow well with 36" round capped concrete sleeve.) As I think has been stated, a filter's only good if it remediates whatever critters you've got. Brita ain't gonna fix hepatitis...you need a survival purification setup for that, and one of those will not support a household's volume.
I have a 60' well with a submersible pump. So far no odor but since so many have moved here, the water levels are down, more septic's in the area, occasional floods which can have run offs into the water. So far no problem except last couple weeks some dirty water or not as clear. Our water comes from springs, not aquafer. We have to share these with Georgia, South Florida. This is why I now think of possible contamination's. And how to prepare in case.
I finally "bit the bullet", and ordered this system, for our well. The past few weeks water is dirty and sometimes a little bit of form, so tsking a bath was scary, This was an emergency to put in something.
Do yourself a favor and get one of these: It makes changing the filter so much easier. I have an old sock that I cut the toe out of so I can slide the sock over the housing, then slide the wrench over the sock. The sock protects the housing from getting chewed up and it gives the wrench a snug fit for maximum leverage. This wrench will not slip, and the long handle gives you lots of leverage. I also grease the o-rings every filter change so as to prevent leaks and to stop the o-ring from seizing to the housing...it makes removal easier. Dunno if it will work on your 20" filters, but that plastic wrench in the pic looks awfully familiar. I bet your 20" housings are taller but not wider. $32 from Walmart. (It was only $24 pre-COVID.) It's still worth the money because it makes maintenance way less of a pain in the butt. Link
The extra filters we ordered, came today, six 20-inch and six ten-inch for the whole house filter. They're cumbersome filters. Waiting until May 04, 2024, for the housing and gauges that hold the filters; they said in an update today, that the UV light and monitor will be here tomorrow. "Major job", coming up soon.
Quite a big and heavy filter, and it gets three of them at a time. Not sure either; but just hope it clears our water up, and makes it, "safe to drink".
We had called a guy at the county about doing a water test, and he was telling us about water clouding up and such, due to storms. I checked the pressure today on the bladder in tank, which was 24 pounds so I pumped it up to 28 lbs, again and it let the iron which is orange come through the pipes again. We need a new filtration system, so I'm glad about this new one.
I order one before the filtration filters and light got here; and it's to small for my filters these filters are huge. Figure I will use it on something else eventually. But I did want to tell you the new filtration system, and bacteria light, works great. Real happy with them.
I'm glad the system works well. If I had a shallow well, I'd go with a bacteria light, too. That's too bad the wrench was too small. When I first installed my filters, they would get stuck and the plastic wrench would slip big time. Then I started greasing the o-rings at every filter change and replacing them once a year, and the housings no longer seize...but that metal wrench sure helps. If you decide that you need a better wrench, they make one with these specs: Fits most Big Blue filtration system housings that accept 20-inch x 4.5-inch diameter water filter cartridges. Link My wrench is for 2.5-inch diameter water filter cartridges.
Thanks; that wrench looks like it will work, I'll get one of those. I put a little Vaseline on o-rings which seems to work good. I do notice some slippage with plastic wrench, the one that comes with filter housings. I will be sure to measure these before ordering a new wrench. Well is 90 ft. deep. The well guy said they hit water at 26 ft.
