Denise, how about a large, sturdy stool? We bought one for Bubba to use until he got big enough not to need it. It has something on the legs to keep it from slipping and rubber on the top part to keep your foot from slipping. It's about 5 inches high.
I thought my friends would laugh on FB but the two that read are crying for me, LOL!! Oh well, I admit I was feeling so funny this a.m. but the days has turned out simple "mov'alous" doll'ing!!
Handy, very handy. I'd hate to attempt that in the dead of night. My luck someone would drive off with me "dangling" and groping!
Thanks. I actually have one. I kept it in our RV long ago. Put it in my mom's room in our one bathroom house when she stayed with us. Lent it to a friend when she had her knee replaced. I put it upstairs for hubby because he said he had problems getting up from the john. But he won't use it. Says he will wait till he gets old. I might put it down the basement, in the summer, where we don't have a toilet.
I'm starting to get used to it. At first it seemed like some sort of temporary thing, and I kept thinking I'd start looking "myself" again. Nope, every day, kept seeing same ole lady in the mirror, so finally stopped looking altogether It's like "when the hell is this going away" LOL!! I met a lady yesterday when I was downstairs getting my mail. She is really little and frail, somewhere in her 80s, maybe beyond. She is all alone and says she needs a lot more help so she has to move. She smelled really bad, just unclean if you know what I mean but she said she can hardly dress herself. She can only get a caregiver once a week she said (independent living here). It really got me thinking about what it will be like, getting "much" older. I think she said she'd lost 3 of her children, after they were grown so it was sad listening to her. I did as long as I could as I know people live "mostly" all alone with no one to talk to but maybe their cat if they have one. I talk to myself a lot, but I know I'm lucky to have my computer, my main hobby and social-time. I thought about how lonely my Grandmother must have been. Her fave thing was having her friend Rose take her shopping or to the Golden Agers center. She also loved watching Lawrence Welk.
It is sad how some elders have to live alone. Yet I've seen many elders in nursing homes, assisted living being badly abused by the personal. Sadly, some are very senile and just take the licks and slaps like nothing is happening. Family put in hidden cameras to see why they are bruised or injured.
@Denise Evans - good grief , it is a wonder you didn't break a foot or something.I never knew short people had these issues. For those of average height and the dang toilets are almost to the ground , it is impossible to get up from even with good knees. Ours is so low we had to buy a seat to make our taller. I miss our very large separate bathrooms..A 106 year old house is built for thin short people not your Texas sized person But Denise if you get something In writing from um doctor maybe then they would get you commode lower to ground. in mean time the ole step stool will do, but be careful even then. Also we insist and have always had the bars in our showers, even in apartments, Should be mandatory regardless of age, Um think they make one for commode are to..brain check that out. I worked in nursing home many years and I must say no abuse from staff that was eve noted. But the patients could become very violent. One sent a nurse to hospital for 3 weeks and she was beaten with a cane. The staff is not allowed to fight back. There again people, living longer ain't always the best option.
Thanks for this @Hedi Mitchell and I think I will call my doctor as soon as I am off here, and get an appointment. I'm sure she would help me out. My foot is still sore but not black and blue so not much to show her. I will ask though anyway. I did find out this taller toilet was put in for a previous tenant. We have the hand bars, lots, one is beside the toilet and one behind it that I'm not sure what good it would do. We all speculate on that one I can imagine being taller and having a much longer trip "down" to the seat, and then back up would be very hard as well. I just am hoping, since I plan to stay out my days here, that I won't have to continue with such a high throne
I have always wondered why they have grab bars behind the stool. Does anybody know? You would have to be a contortionist to reach both of them at the same time.
