I was reading about that a few days ago. I have a few OXO black plastic utensils that I use for my non-stick pans and I am not of a mind to throw them all out. I don't use them very often so maybe I'll just poison us a little bit.
I'm in the same boat. I don't use the plastic spoons unless the stainless ones are in the dishwasher. Same goes for the black spatulas I have. It's rare that I use them. But still...
I actually look on line ahead of time. Crofton has some nice items up till Christmas. But the papers at the front are probably the same.
Just thought I'd mention this, for anyone who owns OXO black kitchen utensils. An inquiry directly to OXO received this response: "We are aware of the article produced by CNN and understand your concerns. Our black utensils are made of silicone and nylon, they are not made from recycled plastics, eliminating the risk of Flame retardants. For over 25 years, the safety and comfort of OXO consumers have been our priority. Our products undergo extensive, rigorous testing through third-party, independent labs for lead, BPA, phthalates, and other potentially harmful chemicals. In addition, we monitor and ensure the products meet or exceed the applicable domestic and international regulations, including those in California Proposition 65, and of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), as well as industry and additional corporate quality standards."
I’ve had many of my black utensils for a long time ……now I’m not sure if I should bin them ..I don’t think they are branded Sigh ..
I had to go look at mine. They are not branded, either. Fortunately, I only use them when my stainless steel slotted spoon or serving spoons are in the dishwasher. I do have a black plastic (silicone?) whisk I use somewhat regularly.
Thank I’ll just bin them ….and not even think twice about it …. I will get a couple more wooden spoons …..items like potato masher / whisks / are all old and made from metal I was in Kmart ( formally Target)/ yesterday and noticed lots of brightly coloured utensils hanging near the checkouts , 1 didn’t touch them but they are likely silicone ….( was there warning at one time about using silicone cooking items like cake dishes)
Even my coveted cast iron can cause the ingestion of too much iron. But I figure if I wash and season it correctly, it is not only non stick, it should not transfer anything. It is so old, like me.
I don’t like plastic electric kettles I can always “ taste plastic “ I had 4 black utensils in my drawer the been binned ….its the same with cooking I use glass or stainless steel saucepans with thee a exception of my heavy cast pot that’s enamel most of my cake pans date back to nearly as old as I’m ….Willow brand and I line them with baking paper
