Unfortunately, many poor people aren't healthy. Medicine, including heart medicine, isn't cheap. Heck, there are those our age that can't even afford Medicare or a Supplement. They have to live with the bad health they have. There are those young folks that have to work two jobs just to survive. That old saying, "money is the source of all evil", is true, but not true, depending on what people want. Wife and I would love to have two homes. One for winter and one for summer. Would love to have a nicer/newer boat/trailer. When it came to selling it, a nice/newer one would be easier to sell than an old 1992 one. Would love to do some traveling. However, all of that would take more money than we have coming in. We pray for those that have lost everything in these fires, but don't criticize those that have the money to have their homes/property protected.
Rebuilding and new construction will definitely be a challenge in these areas if all the undocumented immigrants are rounded up and deported. A 2024 study at UMich estimates that 1.6 million immigrants work in construction, or 20% of the construction workforce.
There is a lot of cross finger-pointing, as the fire chief has now turned against the mayor, and the mayor may have fired her but the news has not been released yet. Newsome is blaming "misinformation", which is what Democrats always do when they get behind the eight-ball. The governor is also pointing to "local officials" as being the cause of the disaster, and, of course, everybody is saying Trump is somehow to blame. When considering the construction issue of deporting illegals in that industry one has to realize that those illegals have taken jobs from American workers. Does anyone, like George W. Bush, really think Americans won't work in construction? Bush claimed illegals were only taking jobs Americans wouldn't do and that simply isn't true. Rebuilding will require big changes in the California permitting processes, which Newsome says he will do. We'll see if the environmentalist lobby allows it even if he really intends to do what he claims.
I just read where price gouging in LA is taking place. Damn, you loose everything you own, yet people still want to make an extra dollar due to your loss. Some jerk posed as fire fighter, who was looting the fire sites. And we wonder what that hell has happened to America? America is going to have to do much better than this to ever be even close to Great.
Yes I have seen her on another site the last couple days and she sent me an email.. She says its a war zone there... Im not sure why she hasnt come here..
I have wondered why more of the wealthy homeowners have not fire-proofed their homes. After our fires here, many who lost homes fire-proofed their homes by clearing brush (which in California you reportedly cannot do) and made the exterior of their houses very fire-resistant. Here is would be metal roofs and metal siding, but in California, it would be metal or tile roofs and metal or stucco on the exterior. I cannot afford to make those changes, but I have a water pump and a lake to help me. Here is a tale of a wealthy person who made those changes to his house and whose house survived even when the rest of his neighborhood burned down. link
Yet, a whole lot of very rich people have died at far younger ages than I am. On-topic, however, it's hard to understand how California's governor could go on television, yet give the clear impression that he's looking for advantage in the fires. He was practically dancing when he was talking about what might be able to be done with the land now that the pesky homeowners were burned out of their homes. I understand he even said something about having "secret" plans.
Yeah, isn't that sad? He was yukking it up off camera just before he went on camera to speak of the tragedy... I guess it is a little bit like him locking the restaurants down during Covid...except for the ones he wants to party at.
I think its terribly sad that the insurance companies have just dropped people for no reason, like they dont wanna pay!! State farm is a disgrace!!!!
If I owned an insurance company, I wouldn't want to insure California houses for either fires or mudslides.
Unfortunately the California fiasco along with the hurricane disasters are going to raise the insurance rates for everybody across the board. In California, it is de facto price controls on insurance that has caused the problem and now Newsome is calling for price controls on building materials for those trying to rebuild. Those control will cause shortages since apparently many of California codes requires special types of materials to be used in new construction. The governor is lifting some of the code requirements reportedly that were important when building a home but are not so important when building thousands of homes and other buildings. I just don't get it. The bureaucrats in California expect the Feds to pick up the bill for the reconstruction, and undoubtedly some funds will be coming but with many strings attached. There will at least be requirements for forest management and water control changes.
Oh look... Biden's next Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. (How's that "sanctuary city" thing working out?) "Suspect arrested with ‘flamethrower’ near LA Fire is an illegal immigrant"
