There were so many years back - now its hard to think of them
We could do with some more, don't you think ?
Do TV programmes give the youngsters hope ? Over here they are more for showing the harsh realities
but I think we should have more feel good factors and show how good life can be ...........

Role model from tv? I may not be watching tv too often because I don't see any one who can be a good role model. Most of those on tv have their unsavory personalities and not so good background. Most of the tv programs here, particularly during prime time, are the so called tv serials where the theme is either love story or gay relationship. It looks like tv has lack of good writers. I'm sure there are some worthy of being role models but there are more on radio, those incessant commentators who are crusaders of sorts.

The media 'mostly' seem to promote disharmony
Our soaps are full of shouting and fighting, so don't watch them
There's not much at all to give a better view on life ...............

As a wee snot, my dad, but I liked the cowboy heroes, like Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers too. In my Teen years it was Robert Ruark, whose writings I devoured. Later years, it was guys like Gen. Patton and other military figures.

Neil Armstrong became my role model, not by how he went to the moon, but by how he returned and handled the fame that came with "doing his job". Buzz, the NASA pitchman, Aldrin came back the total opposite, and is not a good role model, in my opinion. Johnny Carson also handled his retirement well, when he returned to private life.

Johnny Cash and John Wayne are two more, who I admire. Queen Elizabeth is another.

My husband is annoyed by those shouting scenes of tv soaps. The state of tv here is so bad since the prime time (7:30pm to 10:30pm) is occupied by those never-ending soap. There are 3 major channels here and all those tv channels have soap on those times. It's all right for us to watch soaps, particularly our housemaids who are fond of love stories, but when there is excessive shouting and yelling or violence, my husband would tell us to change channels and he would add... "those negative thoughts on tv will reflect on our home so you should always be watching programs with positive scenes."

A friend in one tv network said that executives of their network are so conscious of the survey ratings of programs such that they cannot drastically change the landscape lest they suffer in the network war. That clearly shows crass commercialism in tv programming - it is money and profit that is in the minds of those tv network executives.

@Corie Henson - that's the sad thing about all this - they 'only' see £/dollar signs, not the consequences of their thoughtless
    output :(

There are several young people on tv shows that are respectable and can be role models. Particularly 2 of them named Ogie Alcasid and Dingdong Dantes, both have shown clean living with no controversies in their lovelife. Ogie is an actor, singer and composer while Dingdong is a good character actor. They are both married to actresses. With their good reputation, Ogie and Dingdong were give positions in government like being ambassadors for the youth. Unfortunately, in the recent election (May 9), they shifted their allegiance from the candidate of the government's administration to a newbie politician (who was third only in the presidential race). That shift of loyalty did not sit well with the public because they did the shift less than 1 month before the election day. They are now tarnished with a traitor tag. Tsk, tsk, role models turned spoiled.

    @Corie Henson - that's a shame
Over here, I struggle to think of role models, money speaks 'too loudly'
I know they exist, they are just not promoted as much ..............

Role models can be family members or neighbors,or regular people, whose stories we read about. They don't have to be celebrities.

@Joe Riley - very true, but the youngsters tend to 'look up' to the celebs unfortunately
But - I heard of two inspiring people this morning, they are an elderly married couple who have taken in youngsters off the streets for 'years'
and their influence has helped these young 'uns considerably
The total they have helped is, wait for it .................Two thousand !
I am in absolute awe of this fabulous couple - they have now won the 'Pride of Britain' award - so deserved :)

It seems like those with the biggest mouths get the most attention. I am thinking in part of Muhammed Ali, and also the unnamed Billionaire running for President. Many people who were and are great role models simply are quietly going about their business and living their lives as responsible citizens. There are many, many unsung role models and teachers who are every day people.
