Oh my gosh ! I read about doing this, and had to look it up and see if it was ever done, and sure enough ...... It is dentist recommended . Now, I remember (and maybe some of you remember, as well) having my mouth washed out with soap for saying bad words, or at least something my mom thought I should not have said. It tasted AWFUL ! ! However, after reading that soap in my mouth might actually be better than using toothpaste, I gave the idea another spin around in my mind. Possibly, if one was only brushing their teeth, and not having the soap slathered on one's tongue, it would not be as horrible in the mouth ? I might give it a try and see how it goes, just out of curiosity. Here's some info about the idea, in case you are interested. http://www.healingteethnaturally.com/brushing-teeth-with-tooth-soap.html
I don't think I would do that. We buy toothpaste by the dozen and there is no reason to save on toothpaste. But let me segue a bit. For my hair, I use laundry bar soap at night. In the morning, I always use shampoo because the scent is important since I am going to work. But at night, the laundry bar soap has a particular brand (Perla) as advised by the boss of my husband. It gives nutrients to the scalp which helps in preventing baldness or may it slows down the onset of baldness. I think it is good because I had thinning hair some years ago and it seemed that my falling hair was somewhat arrested by that laundry bar soap.
If I'd have to guess, @Corie Henson , I'd think it would be more about the fluoride issue than saving money. As for me, never got my mouth washed out with soap and really don't care to start now.
Being a naturally curious person, I had to try the tooth-brushing with bar soap idea, just to see if it was as awful as having my mouth washed out with soap was, back when I was a kid and moms did that kind of thing to teach us not to say bad words. (It worked .... I still don't say bad words !) I was very careful to only use a small amount on the toothbrush, and to just brush my teeth and not get the soap on my tongue. It actually didn't taste much at all. I was surprised. Of course, it didn't have all of that nice minty flavor that we have with toothpaste; but on the plus side, no fluoride or glycerin adhered to my teeth. So, overall.......not as bad as we imagined !
I suppose it would depend on the kind of soap, too... the smell of Irish Spring is wonderful, so I'd probably choose that... some are milder than others. Ivory might be a good choice since it's so "pure"... at least according to them. And then there are things like Lava soap... hmmmm. Well, I'll stick to toothpaste. I don't mind fluoride. You were a real sport for giving it a try, @Yvonne Smith !
No comment from me....you know both my children are dentists and they are both married to dentists and my daughter's father in law is an oral surgeon and both his wives were dental hygienists, so all I'll say is that flossing is even more important than brushing, plus have your teeth cleaned to remove plaque. Gum disease causes other problems in your body besides in just your mouth. My daughter never recommended any toothpaste over another except sensodyne for me because I have sensitive teeth. As for fluoride, it's important in children to prevent tooth decay. There's been a lot less cavities in children since it was put in water. Not good business for dentists but contrary to popular belief, they really do want what's best. Fluoride is not to their benefit.
Yeah, I generally take what I call the "quack reports" and let them go right out of my other ear. Something is bad, then it's good, then it's bad again. What have we seen in our lifetime? Eggs, liver, coffee, chocolate... and much more that isn't food. I'm a "never believe the things you hear" person. But anyhow, to pull back to topic, I think the hype about fluoride is probably like the other "scares" but even if not, I won't be trading my Crest Pro-Health Advanced for Irish Spring. Nor would I use Close-Up as a body wash. Or shampoo.
I must be getting senile. I read the article, and decided to try it. I did as @Yvonne Smith suggested, I kept the soap off my tongue, and rinsed my mouth extra well, which left little after taste, and cup of coffee took care of that. When I was young, my parents didn't teach us about or the importance of cleaning your teeth. When I was about eight, one of my foster parents taught me to used baking soda, and once a week vinegar. Both my parents lost their teeth by the age of 40. At 64 I still have all my teeth. I've tried toothpaste, and for some reason it makes my gums and teeth sore. For about three years, I've been useing a perscription toothpaste call Colgate PreviDent 5000 ppm, but it is fairly expensive. So if the soap works, and the soreness doesn't return I'll be saving some money.
I've never known anyone to wash their hair as much as you do Corie and you have a great head of hair !
I only wash my hair every 2 days and it's still on the dry side. @Ina I. Wonder , have you tried sensodyne?
