As I see it, there are at least two problems with GMO foods. One, we don't know whether they are safe, can't depend on the government to tell us, and should at least be able to know whether the food we're eating has been genetically modified. It makes me wonder where the "choice" people are on this one. Secondly, the end result will be that Monsanto will own the world's food supply, as farmers will not be able to save seeds or even find seeds that haven't been genetically modified. Whether you choose to believe in God or nature, I'd trust either before I'd trust Monsanto.
You can still get good seed from many organic farmers, and you'll have a better chance getting the seeds from a small farmer than any of the bigger ones. A local farmers market is the best place to find good veggies, because they generally can't get the bigger grocery stores to buy their wares. You will pay quite a bit more for the seed, but they are worth it. The problem is that when people see unmodified foods today they think there is something wrong with it. Now days people think that all good carrots are straight and long, but most "real" carrots have more than one carrot tuber, and generally have funny shapes. When they see oddly shaped and colored tomatoes they think the same, and potatoes too. When they see organic farm animals, and those animals are not big and muscled, they think something is wrong. They are just not modified in anyway. Few people really know what unmodified food looks like anymore.
@Ina I. Wonder If only "looks" were a reliable guiding factor! Does GMO corn on the cob "look" any different? I think not. Yet, it contains genes taken from the E- Coli Bacterium, the commonest residual in the gut. I call such corn $h!t Corn. Frank
@Frank Sanoica , Here in rural Harris county Texas, if you want to sell your organic products at a farmer's market you have to prove to them that your product is totally organic. An agriculture officer had to come to our small farm three years in a row to test the soil, check our seed source, and make sure we were using good manure, (We used horse manure from the stables a block away.) to fertilize our crops. Then if you are excepted, they come out to check you product for their market just before each harvest. Our market also gave out sources to be able to find and buy good organic seeds. I know our veggies didn't look much like what you buy in the big grocery stores.
I know that's Monsanto's story and you won't believe anything else but that's not necessarily true. Does Your Body Absorb Genetically Engineered DNA?
