Bright Produce For Optimal Cell Health

    Interesting info coming from the European Journal of Nutrition. It states how the red, orange, yellow, and dark green produce makes our Telomeres longer (DNA-related term) and thus improves our cells. (The bottom line was making cells younger.)

    So anyhow, with this in mind, what's your favorite of these? I'd have to choose watermelon... and I've been eating a LOT of spinach... more in the past year than I have my entire life combined.

    I'm not crazy about fruit except watermelon so for red I choose that but I like spinach the best. I used to like kale but have eaten too much and now I seldom buy it.

    Except for a soup recipe I have that's pretty good, I don't generally buy kale... no, scratch that, it's a salad recipe. My soups take spinach. Wonder if there's such a thing as watermelon and spinach salad? Hmmm.... and what kind of dressing? I need to go look that up!

    You beat me to it because I was going to post that watermelon is used in salads a lot. Lots of restaurants serve it.

    I'm going to try that recipe! I even have a bottle of balsamic that I rarely use. Not real fond of feta, but I can deal.

    I've had similar in restaurants Mari and you can barely tell its watermelon.

    I love west coast oyster raw on the half shell and now the trend is to serve with a champagne vinaigrette and also sometimes a watermelon salsa. Yummy. Not cheap though.

    When my son and DIL took me out to dinner we had them as appetizers and at $3.50 for one that adds up. I think I had a dozen.:)

    I'm not that fond of east coast oysters though, they're too mineral tasting whereas the west coast is sweet.

    Spinach salad is one of my favorite meal. I often have one for breakfast. I could easily toss a simple salad out of spinach, cauliflower, celery stalks and radishes. I just combine them all, cut in small pieces and top with lemon juice.

    I eat watermelon not because I like it. Watermelon is one good food when I am on a diet. My most recent favorite is sliced peaches which I feasted on when we were in Hongkong last month. Until now I still don't know the specific brand of that canned peaches. For the dark green, it is avocado for me. However, my physician brother-in-law cautioned me about the cholesterol content of avocado. On the contrary, someone said that avocado has actually good cholesterol that fights bad cholesterol. I really don't know but I stopped eating avocado for years now.

    Granting that the studies are correct, that puts the fruits and vegetables on top of the heap for good nutrition and better health.

    CORIE!!!! Run to the store and buy avocado! It's a very healthy superfood! Here's the proof!!!

    It's GOOD for cholesterol. One of my favorite ways to eat it is just 1/4 of an avocado spread on toast instead of butter... it's a favorite breakfast. @Corie Henson Oh, I should add that since it has more calories than other fruits and veggies, I stick to 1/4 at a time... or 1/2 if I'm totally craving it.

    Ah, you beat me to it Mari. Only thing is they are pretty high calorie or I'd I eat them all day.

    I sometimes eat it on toast spread with avocado and a fried egg on top, open faced. More of a lunch for me.


    Just want to add that if you are eating canned peaches, watch out for the syrup.

    YES! I do that, too, when I have an egg with it... it's soooo good! Open faced for me always, too. Yesterday I did a chicken-ranch-avocado quesadilla for lunch. I'll be doing it again. :)

    Canned fruit... agreed. I don't buy it, and if I need it for a recipe, I try to get the Lite with water instead of syrup.

    I've done the quesadilla also like that. I never buy canned fruit. Not fond of it but if peaches were as good as when I was little I would buy the fresh peach.

    The only good peaches I can get anymore are directly from the Amish at the farmers market or roadside stands. I know they go to the orchard, pick them off the trees, and take them to market. Organic, and no picking when they're hard and bitter like in the stores thinking they'll ripen and taste better... they never do. I like fresh pears, too, if not from the grocery store.

    Probably why I don't care for fruit anymore because it sucks at the supermarket.

    @Mari North and @Chrissy Page, avocado is in season now. I saw avocados last week in the Sunday market. It's been a long time so maybe now that you both say avocado is good for me then I would buy some this coming Sunday. I eat one whole avocado in one sitting. I take the flesh and into a bowl of milk with sugar. That's the way we it avocado.

    With sliced peaches, yes, I understand the sweet syrup but I don't sip the syrup, just the peaches for me.
