Rice is the staple here and they blame rice when people become overweight or obese. I am over the ideal weight by 20 pounds and I'm quite scared to think that I couldn't pull it down the number in the scales anymore. As a knee-jerk reaction, I went on a "no-rice diet" for 2 weeks now. It's a big sacrifice for me because I am used to eating rice and now I have been depriving myself of that staple. Guess what? For 2 weeks of no-rice diet, I have lost 250 grams or about half a pound, huh.
I agree with that Corie - I love rice too but I can't eat it and haven't for many years I find it instantly very filling and did feel bloated after eating it
Rice, wheat, corn and potatoes are and have been the staples of humans worldwide since man began cultivating crops. The obesity problem is a recent problem. We can't blame it on these. Your outcome was typical, @Corie Henson, diets don't work very well, you suffer through them for nothing.
Everything in moderation is very true I 'love' potatoes and usually include an 'extra' one on me plate After years of doing that and regretting it, I stopped and now enjoy the meal, I didn't need that extra tata
I had a serious talk with my husband a while ago about my problem that my weight hasn't moved in spite of my 2 weeks of dieting. His recommendation is for me to go on a fruit and vegetables diet. No rice, no meat nor fish for a week. He said he is afraid that my weight has reached the threshold of no return, meaning I wouldn't lose substantial weight even if I don't eat anything in a week. That's what happened to one former colleague who is now obese - she went on a binge for a year. Her weight of 150 pounds shot up to 250 and now I guess it's over 300 pounds. She has difficulty walking because her legs are colliding due to the excessive fat. Well, I admit that I am scared.
I wouldn't give up Corie - vegetables is good but you need the fish and meat too Cut down on the amounts, you will see a difference Fortunately, I haven't a sweet tooth so a little dark chocolate when I fancy that, but I couldn't manage a pudding after a meal now - I think because I have slowed down compared to the way I was Could you dance it off Corie ?
I think that more exercise and increasing your activity will be key Corrie. ALso, you may want to drink more water and eat lean proteins. Feel the difference. You may want to follow a tried and true plan like Weight Watchers to help with your weight loss efforts. It is one of the things that you can depend on, however, no matter what route you take for weight loss it is still going to be difficult. it is one of the things that you will find when you tr to ose weight at our ages.
Even if you cut out rice Corie, if you eat more calories then you should you won't lose. It's all about calories really. I never eat rice because I don't like it, but that hasn't made me lose weight unless I also cut out other things. You'll have to figure out how many calories you can eat to lose weight. Then see how much you are burning with exercise....the more you exercise, the more calories you can eat. I can lose weigh on just rice if it doesn't exceed about 1,000 calories a day. For me to lose at a healthy pace, I can eat about 1,100 calories max. For me to maintain my weight it's about 1500 calories a day. If I want to lose a pound a day it's less than 900 calories. Low carb is better for dieting though because for one thing it kind of curbs your appetite. I e only really lost weight easily doing low carb. Weight watchers never worked for me but does for others. I know what works for me because I've been doing it all my life. I can never eat junk or white carbs Because my weight will start creeping up. I've been around 125-128 for the last 20 years except when I quit smoking. I gained 30 lbs but lost it Doing low carb. I'm also 5'4" so my weight is perfect. You need to eat protein, Corie. Fruit has a lot of sugar and calories. Eat the fish but not fried. Have some green veggies as a side or a salad. For lunch have a HUGE salad with a few slices of chicken breast but watch the dressing. A little olive oil and vinegar at the most. Breakfast...eggs, any way you want just watch the calories if you add things, also don't have bread with it. Or plain oatmeal or a protein bar or a low calorie yogurt preferably Greek because it has more protein. Snacks ...a cheese stick, some strawberries, veggies like green pepper, celery, carrots. Eat 3 meals with 2 snacks. You will have to make sure your meals aren't more than about 300 calories and snacks less. Unless you exercise a lot. It takes about an hour of brisk walking to burn about 300 calories I think. Wow, I really write a lot when it's about dieting, lol.
I was diagnosed a few years ago as being Pre Diabetic despite the fact that I was of normal weight. My problem was CARBS, white rice, potatoes, French bread, pizza. I consumed these carbs in huge portions. I cut down drastically on all the BAD CARBS and Voila!! by Blood Sugar readings went to normal.
I always thought that eating the right portions, was the key. we rarely eat seconds, and whenever practical, try to use smaller plates. Those "all you can eat" joints should be closed and boarded up!
To lose weight you have to eat less calories, they can be healthy calories or empty calories, that's up to you. I choose healthy calories.
@Chrissy Page Wish I could get my wife to agree to that! But, her diligence at carefully weighing and checking the carb. content has resulted in 10 pounds lost in about a month or so. No sugars, no fruits, low carb. everything, she gobbles fats, uses whipping cream (!), makes "fat bombs", some kind of little cakes containing weird flour having nearly no carbs, but I admit she does total the daily calories although the carbs, fat, and protein must be in a certain ratio. To me, it's still if it's calories in = calories out, your weight remains stable. Frank
Sounds like she's doing Atkins but if she's totaling calories then maybe not. Seems on atkins you an eat more calories but to lose weight you have to be in ketosis.
@Chrissy Page She says it is not Atkins, but similar. More fats allowed, but less protein. As it is, she is consuming almost twice the average daily adult protein amount, because to get the programmed amount of fat eating meat, delivers a lot of protein. Frank
