I went through the same ordeal in 2012! My old Altima was on its last legs and was costing me $500 every time I had to take it in for a repair and that was so it ran, didn't get the A/C that only worked on full blast fixed or the heavy trunk that unless you held it with one hand, fell on your back. :(

I was looking at the cheapest decent new car I could find and that's when I bought my brand new Chevy Cruze with the help of my kids.

It's 5 years old already, seems like only yesterday that I bought it...time goes too fast!!

Ours is an old car, too, and well over 200,000 miles; so we never know when it will break down either. It is 17 years old, and definitely time for a replacement; but we can't afford a different car right now, so we will just keep on driving the old station wagon for as long as it hold out and keeps on rolling down the road and back . We do not go very far with it, and never out on the highway.
What kind of vehicle are you going to look for, @Patsy Faye ?

My wife mentioned about us getting a new/used vehicle. Unfortunately, that would take her staying at her job longer, having a car payment and us not getting out of here in 2019...........no way!!

We have to have two vehicles. If we only had one, and it had to go into the shop, we would be in TROUBLE. We have nobody to go to here to help us. So, with whatever happens to either vehicle, we have to fix it. Now, right before we move, the Dodge RAM 1500 will be sold for whatever we can get for it and, hopefully, the Dodge Durango will get us to wherever we move to.

Some things just can't be replaced that easily when it comes to finances.

My Altima was a 1997 and had about that many miles on it also....my kids and I felt that it was getting unsafe for the drive to my daughter's and it did break down on me once while driving home, had to be towed back to my daughter's because I was closer to her when it died.

Ever since the ride in the tow truck, Pickles is afraid of big trucks.

@Yvonne Smith - have no idea what make/model to go for, cars have changed so much
Its a matter of searching the internet looking at different models
It won't be a new one. We have had ours 10 years and that was secondhand, served us well too
We want an automatic which limits us as the automatics have changed, so we want one that was 'before'
    the change

We had to make the "another car" decision last August. Both our old vehicles needed so much work done and weren't safe to drive anymore but the cost of all the repairs would have cost us almost the price of a new vehicle...so I went car shopping for the best deal through the Internet and through the ads in our City newspapers, etc. What astounded me was that the price of a used car just a few years old was basically the same price as a brand new vehicle! So that fact right there made me decide to go for the newer vehicle. I researched the best cars for safety and insurance cost, as well as the best warranties on the vehicles. My dream car was a Kia Soul...and for safety and insurance ratings and cost as well as best warranty it got an A+ but cost wise it was a few thousand over our budget. Yet, even though I knew we could not afford the Kia Soul (in my favorite color even) it seemed God wanted us to have that exact car...and He made it all work out so that we are now happy owners of my dream car in the exact color I had printed off and put in my "dream" folder! :)

When you really need something...God will provide that need....sometimes He even surprises you with a dream come true too! :D So I just know whatever y'all need @Patsy Faye...God will provide it.

I have a 2002 Tracker that is still running well, but my wife traded her 2002 Focus in on a 2013 Focus about a year ago. I'm thinking that if my Tracker starts having trouble, we might just go with one car rather than spending a lot of money on another one.

My Honey liked having two cars, but we really didn't need two cars anymore since even if he has to go to work and I want to keep the car to run errands, etc. his part time job is just right down the road from our home and he can be dropped there real fast without it being an inconvenience. :) At this season in our lives we definitely don't need two cars anymore.

When my ex lived with me we always used his car, it was an SUV and it was dark blue but have no idea what it was. I never used my Altima then at all...except occasionally took it out of the garage to make sure it was running...I would have had even more miles on it if I used it the years John lived with me.

My 2012 Mazda 3 now has 26,000 miles after 8 years of ownership, and I'm now driving it less than 1500 miles annually.
