Importance Of Exercise For The Lymph System

    Our lymph system is the natural detox drainage for our body, and it operates in a similar fashion as our circulatory system does, except that it has no real pump (heart) to keep the lymph circulating .
    The lymph travels through our body and is pushed along by one-way valves, and those valves are worked when we exercise. This is one very good reason for a person to have at least some activity, otherwise the toxins just collect in our body, causing pain and sickness eventually.
    One of the best exercises for the lymph system is rebounding, or using a mini-trampoline. The bouncing not only helps our cardiovascular system; but it also starts the lymph moving along and cleaning out the accumulated toxins.
    I have been looking at the rebounders, and I used to have one many years ago; but I think that with my bad balance, I might not be able to use a trampoline anymore. They do make them with a balance bar, which would be what I need; but those cost a lot more and are seriously out of my budget.
    I have been adding "water rebounding" to my swimming pool exercises, and I think that is helping. At least, it feels about the same as it did when I was bouncing on my mini-trampoline.
    It is a good way for me to at least start helping my lymph system, and easy to do. I just get in shoulder-deep water, and start bouncing on my toes. One good thing is that if I did lose my balance, I would just fall in the water and not hurt myself like I might if I fell off of a regular trampoline.
    I am still researching this idea because it seems like cleaning up the lymph system is a pretty important thing to do.

    I had one of those mini trampolines when they first became popular...they had a name but I forget. Jumping on one is fun and something I wouldn't mind doing if I wasn't afraid and I don't have balance problems.

    I just haven't jumped in such a long time except a few weeks ago when I tried a jumping jack. :)

    @Chrissy Cross - agree its a problem with balance problems, I may give Tai Chi a go
    said to be good for balance issues

    I remember the jumping jack story, @Chrissy Cross ! I am still chuckling about that one....
    What are you afraid of with a trampoline if you do not have balance problems ?
    I have never had very good balance all of my life; but after the broken leg , it is worse. The accident destroyed so much of my leg bone that the leg is now shorter, and also a little crooked; so I am always off-balance.
    Even the jumping jacks should help with the lymph glands, just get yourself a sports bra first !

    Lol @Yvonne Smith, yes a sports bra when jumping is a good idea....guess my main concern is my tailbone...if jumping would make it hurt more.

    I have been "bouncing" in the swimming pool for a few days now, and I am thinking that it is good for me ! I can feel it helping the muscles, and it definitely shakes up my insides; so it should be pushing those little lymphs along throughout my body. I am doing 5 mintues at a time in shoulder-deep water, and I think that I can do this at home in our swimming pool, too (once the rain finally stops--- no swimming in thunderstorms !).
    However, I have been looking at the rebounders on Amazon, ebay, and at Walmart, and I found one on Amazon for $11.98 with free shipping, and I ordered it. It is a small one, and I think that I can use it in the hallway at home. We can put a shower curtain bar across the hallway that I can use for balance support until I get better at it, and I will be starting slow and easy until I determine if I can stil do this.
    I used to have one years ago, and I loved jumping on it; so if I can keep my balance, then I think I will like this one, too; but I didn't want to spend much money on one if I wasn't sure that I could use it.
    I looked it up to see if it would work for you with your back problem, @Chrissy Cross , and the answer is .......maybe. The maybe depends on what is causing the tailbone pain, and in some cases it can actually do a lot of good.
    Apparently, it is a recommended treatment for some kinds of spinal degeneration, and specifically , one with a big long name that sounded kind of like that arthritis that @Ina I. Wonder was telling us about.
    Possibly , it might help your back, Ina; so you might want to read the article, and then ask you doctor what he thinks.

    They make special trampolines for seniors, or for people who have balance problems; but of course, they cost way more than my $12 one costs.
    Here is a short little video made by an older guy who explains some of the benefits of rebounding for seniors and Baby Boomers. It looks to me like just about anyone who is mobile at all could use one of these rebounders; but the main reason i posted this is because he helps to explain the reasons that using a rebounder helps condition and improve our body .
    If you google rebounding for seniors, there is a lot of good information available on the internet.

    I am so impressed by your revealing of the "one-way" valves, because as I understand things, it is difficult for animals which stand upright for their hearts to "suck" blood up from the lower extremities back to their heart, to again be circulated. Gravity is the problem. Our hearts develop very little "sucking pressure", or vacuum. As a result, while standing up, the blood circulation tends to "pool" in our legs. Now, walking, use of the leg muscles, produces very important responses within the VEINS of the legs, which are responsible for returning the blood flow UP back to the heart, in that tiny muscles surrounding the veins act as "one-way" valves, just as you describe. Each heartbeat raises the blood upwards within the veins, against gravity, whereupon the muscles at the low end of the pulse constrict the vein's blood flow, holding the content within the vein from falling back down into the feet.

    This incredibly well-programmed operation is of absolute paramount importance in humans' ability to remain Bipeds, walking on two feet. Walking strengthens those "check-valve" muscles and encourages better circulation as well as limiting blood "pooling" in the lower extremities.

    This is exactly right, @Frank Sanoica , and even with the help of a "pump", the blood has a hard time getting back uphill to our heart. This is one of the reasons that sitting for hours (like on an airplane) can cause blood clots in the legs. The veins also have these one-way valves; but they do not always work like they should either, and then we get what is called "leaky veins".
    My doctor tested me for this because my legs swell, and explained that while a little leakage is normal, mine was a lot higher than it was supposed to be.
    After I started studying about leaky veins and what will help, I discovered that the lymph system works in a similar fashion, albeit with no pump at all, since it does not connect with the heart pump.
    Walking, and most other exercise, does help both the circulatory and the lymph systems; but sometimes we older people can't walk because of arthritis, gout, or some other ailment that renders the knees too stiff to walk comfortably.
    Rebounding is supposed to be much less demanding on the knees and joints of our body; while adding the extra benefit of bouncing and helping our internal organs, as well as moving the blood and the lymph.
    Even people who can't walk can use a rebounder while sitting on it.

    Wow! The videos look fun. I waited to until after I saw my doctor today before commenting on this idea of rebounding. I had never heard of it before. So I pull up this thread to show my doctor. (My iPad goes everywhere with me.) But, he told me to stick to my gazelle glider. When he was here to help set up my tower garden, he tried out the glider, and now he wants one. But he told me that as bad as my spine was getting he was worried about the potential damage to the already compromised nerve system along my spine.

    But I did add walking very early in the mornings now. Two couples in my neighborhood circle have started a card and board game gathering to whomever wishes to drop in. They are separated just enough that us older folk can stop by awhile to rest for whatever reason we might have, and after a rest we can finish our walk. Or they will drive anyone that needs it home.

    I really didn't get what a lymphatic system was, so I looked a chart up, and this one seemed to explain it best for me.

    A while back, I found a mini-trampoline on Amazon for about $11 and ordered it. It didn't arrive, and they kept pushing back the arrival time. It was from a third party seller on Amazon, and not sent from Amazon itself. I ended up canceling the order because it was apparently never shipped, and amazon refunded the money to me.
    After that, I received a $50 Amazon gift card that I had earned by doing online surveys, and using that plus the credit for the undelivered one, I ordered a better trampoline.
    This one has a handle that will help me with balance issues; so I won't have to worry about making one or having to put it against the wall in the back corner to brace myself if I lost my balance.
    I will be starting very easy and not doing any strenuous bouncing, especially right at first. We have been rearranging the pantry room and the exercise room; so now I need to get busy and get that done so I have a place to put the trampoline once it arrives next week.

    I ordered a new rebounder (mini-trampoline) and it should be here on Monday. I had one for years but it was getting too "saggy" and not enough bounce... kind of like me. :D I've been doing a lot more indoor exercise this summer for some reason, mostly following exercise videos and such. I don't like the treadmill because I find it mind-numblingly boring. I do enjoy my glider; I can really get my heart rate up on that thing.

    I didn't buy one with the handle since I have good balance and many reviews complained that the bars are not very stable and some are noisy. I can't stand exercise equipment that creaks and moans.

    Anyway... new rebounder on Monday; trip to ER on Tuesday. :D:D
