Was wondering what law enforcement agencies all across America think about tv shows that portray corrupt law enforcement officers aka "dirty cops"? Obviously everyone knows these tv shows are acting, not real, but at the same time, these tv shows that show the corruption sure can't be popular with the agencies.

    Two Examples:
Shades of Blue, starring Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta
Wife and I have been watching this show since it first came on tv, mainly because we like JLo and have seen a number of her movies and watched her as a judge when she was on America Idol.
We watched the first episode of the season last night (we recorded it from Sunday night). We already knew how corrupt the NYPD Detective Dept. she works in is and she is fully part of it. However, last night we seen that not only her Lt. and her co-officers are corrupt, so is the Captain and a couple of detectives that work for him. Almost the entire show kept us on the edge of our recliners and was somewhat scary.

The movie Magnum Force (Clint Eastwood) where three corrupt motor officers, one played by David Soul of Starsky & Hutch fame, get information about criminals that get off on technicalities in court, they kill them. Turns out that Clint Eastwood's former partner is behind the killings as well.

    Your thoughts?

My thoughts are, there are a good few bad cops out there
Just as there are bad, sometimes evil doctors
Showing this behaviour in whatever form can't be a bad thing

What I hate are all the shows that depict the police violating policies and laws in order to get the bad guy, while the audience is applauding their willingness to do anything in order to get the bad guy. This just clears the way for the acceptance of police corruption.

I will say I love the Dirty Harry movies. San Francisco before it turned into the s*** hole it now is.

Do I think there is corruption in police forces. Yes I do. I also think there are good cops out there. I could almost make an analogy to the medical field I work in but I'm not going to get into it.

Sounds just like what Clint Eastwood done in his Dirty Harry movies. He had his own form or law enforcement and told his Superiors just that. Another movie that reminds me of that is Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy. In one way or another, he was going to find his friends killer, even though his Superior told him distinctly "leave this case alone, Axel". Yet another movie I can think of is Cobra, with Sylvester Stallone.

Follow legal procedures? No way were either of these officers were going to do that. They always become the hero's, even though they don't follow legal procedures and disobey their command.

I don't know about that wording "s*** hole" when it comes to Frisco. Like other cities with a lot of crime, including parts of the city we currently live in, they would have to be called the same thing. Thing is, people are moving to these cities each and every day.

Maybe they're not to popular...but in my opinion corruption exists in almost every Law Enforcement Agency...just like in Politics. I used to go out with a Policeman and the stories he told me about Officers keeping some of the cash or drugs when they made an arrest right here in the City I live in. I stopped dating him because of what he told me because I was never sure if he might have been doing that too.

The thing is Law Enforcement is Government and our Government is pretty much all corrupt these days.

Funny, but, from what I remember, the tv shows Dragnet and Adam-12 never showed any kind of corruption. Neither did Police Woman, SWAT, Hawaii Five-O. None of those old police shows did.

This is the last season for Shades of Blue. Next week, JLo aka Harley, gets kidnapped again by the former FBI agent Stahl. This time, I'll be she kills him.

I thought NYPD Blue (1981-1987) was a great series. I never watched it when aired originally, but they had a marathon on one cable channel (the Audience Channel on Direct TV) a few years ago. Also missed Hill Street Blues. Too busy working.

I also knew a policeman who took things they confiscated like pot or money. This was the pretend husband of my lesbian friend.

She's the one that told me the stories....nothing really big, just some pot for their own use. To a point I think all cops accept some small favors...even if it's free donuts. But it's the ones that are really corrupt tha give all a bad name.

My lesbian friend's father was also a cop in Pittsburgh...but just a beat cop in downtown. He always bought home something small for us...candy, etc.

We got into all the movies downtown for free...same with ball games. Didn't think anything of it.

Wonder how much free stuff officers in uniform or plain clothes get for free?

Somewhat off-topic, but free stuff was one reason I wanted to get into Purchasing. The Purchasing Manager at one company I worked for, got free tickets to Dodger and Angel baseball games, some local (So Calif) NFL games and a big basket of fruit for Christmas. When I finally got into Purchasing, a law passed in California that Vendors could no longer give free things to customers (Purchasing Agents/Buyers). But, I like Purchasing so much, wanted to stay in it.

Yes they are moving in. For jobs or I don't know what. But who wants to get on BART (bay area rapid transit) and walk by people shooting up, worrying about stepping on needles and more. At one time when I was younger, I wished to live in a city. Not anymore.

Just like here in Jacksonville, lots and lots of people are moving here for the nice salaries. These people don't give a hoot about how much crime is in this city. Almost on a daily basis, there is at least one homicide here. It's no wonder folks here absolutely won't watch local news.

We never want to live in a city this size ever again.

@Cody Fousnaugh Cities certainly have issues that are often not found in large towns or smaller areas. This can vary from area to area, town to town. Years ago I worked with a woman who told me when she graduated from nursing school she moved to a large city much to the worry of her parents since she was single. She stayed a couple of years with bars on her apartment window and as she was walking home from work one afternoon proud to be wearing her nursing whites a man calmly passed her, snatched her purse off her shoulder and ran.

She too said never again in a large city.
