Curves is on my silver sneakers list. It's very close but it's not my favorite mode of exercise. I may check it out tomorrow but I think I'm too out of shape to do the 30 min non stop circuit on those machines. What do you think @Yvonne Smith or anybody that's familiar with Curves? It's less than a mile from my house, can't beat that...I'll still probably drive though, lol.
https://www.curves.com/curves-circuit It's right next to my Walgreens! If I leave my neighborhood following the green line I'm in Fresno, if I go the other direction I'm in Clovis. Nothing to do with Curves but just thought I'd let you peek into my world. That empty space is a big plaza being built as we speak...lots of for sale signs on houses that back up to it.
I do not know anything about Curves, @Chrissy Cross . Maybe someone else here knows about them? Do you have to do a whole class exercise, or can you just go there and do the exercises that you want to do ? Where we go, there are several options. They have classes that happen at certain times, like Zumba and water aerobics classes. Then they have all of the aerobic equipment, like exercise bikes, treadmills, and such as that, and each person can use whichever ones they want to use, and set their own pace. Bobby goes into the weights area, because he likes lifting weights, and that is also something that people do at their own pace. All I do is the swimming part because we are only there for an hour, and if I do anything else, then I miss swimming time. Maybe if you check the Curves website, it will give you some information what they have that is geared for seniors ?
It's not like a regular gym... It's a circuit, I did it about 10 years ago..not my favorite thing and in 10 years Ive added some back pain issues etc. They must have something geared for seniors I would hope since silver sneakers pays for it. Guess I'll see. The gym I joined this morning is like you describe but it's a 15 minute drive and the place was creepy and yucky. I did do the treadmill there this morning but I just don't see myself going there again.
There are several fitness centers that seem like they would be close to the Curves near you, but might not be part of Silver Sneakers. What you might do, is call some of the ones that look promising and see how much a membership is. Like you mentioned, it could be better to pay a membership fee and not drive so far and have a fitness center that you enjoy rather than have one that is further away, or that you do not like. We have other choices here as well, but the Wellness Center where we go is the only one that offers swimming as part of the program. The membership that we have only includes the exercise portion, so we pay $15 each per month to be able to use the water portion. Even though Bobby does not swim, he likes to sit in the steam room or sauna. Here are some that looked like they are in your part of town. I also found this place that offers senior exercises, and looked like it might be in your area, and a minimal charge. https://www.fresnostate.edu/chhs/safecvc/documents/Community Classes Spring 2014 Update.pdf
In the letter I received with my silver sneakers card, only 5 gyms were eligible. 2 I couldn't find...went to Blast Fitness this morning and that was nasty. I used to belong to George Brown gyms...maybe I'll check that. They have more than is shown on the map. Thanks @Yvonne Smith
She did, but not the fact that she paid for a year's membership a few weeks before they closed the Curves in Millinocket. She was able to get a refund, but not without calling corporate.
Hope you find a place you like, Chrissy. A Curves opened up in a small town out in the country here. That really surprised me. I never was inside though. It didn't last long. Became a Mexican restaurant last time I checked. lol I don't know much about gyms, but the one time I did join, I just couldn't stick with it. The most useful piece of equipment, to me, was the elliptical. They didn't have very many and there was always a waiting line. I always found after I got off a treadmill, it seemed like I was moving backwards.
Well they're closed today so I'll check it out tomorrow @Nancy Hart ...maybe. Thy do have weird hours...closed from 12-3 pm! I wouldn't go then anyway. It's a small place and I guess the owner needs time away...not like a huge gym with many employees. I just know I need more exercise....in some shape or form and I'm basically lazy so it's not easy.
Well I joined! I think I'll like it. Bunch of old ladies in there when I signed up. The owner had a British accent and I asked her about it and she said she moved from South Africa 5 years ago. I told her I was worried about keeping up since I'm out of shape. She said I can go at my pace. The counter was chest high where I was filling out forms and she was sitting on the other side of it. Before I left I asked if my sketchers where ok to wear and I lifted my leg up to where she could see my shoes, she said if you can lift your leg that high...you won't have any problems...I like her! They also have a luncheon once a month if you want to go, so that's nice. I'm happy!! @Yvonne Smith ....tagged you so you'd see it! @Cody Fousnaugh ...you were interested also... @Patsy Faye too. Haha...I want to tell everyone!!!
