Wooden snow shed on the Central Pacific Railroad, now Union Pacific RR, over the Donner Pass, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, circa 1900.

Southern Pacific RR operated about 135 hundred huge "Cab Forward" steam locomotives which were actually just turned-around, placing the Engineer and Fireman in the front, so that the smoke trailed behind. They were used specifically in the snowsheds as well as tunnels crossing the Donner Pass. These were articulated locomotives, meaning each was actually two sets of driving wheels, with the frame "hinged" in the center to allow such long machines to traverse curves.

Here is how they negotiated tight curves:

@Nancy Hart @Don Alaska Here is the last S.P. big articulated pulling an excursion fan trip over Donner Pass. Some history included in narrative.

Mr. Ed Yungling of California, a big fan of live steam model railroading, decided to build a 1/8 scale working model of the cab forward. Friends and also builders told him it was an impossible task. Took him quite a few years as I recall, but he succeeded, and here it is:

Brilliant idea. I love history and nostalgia. I was going to create a similar historical quiz thread. Was thinking of calling it A Step Back In Time. Meanwhile I will add this...

The first photo was of University of Washington students, on their way to a site in downtown Seattle to protest the Kent State shootings.

The second photo shows a conspiracy by the media. They erased the fence post stuck in Mary Vecchio's head from John Filo’s photo, I believe for Life Magazine. :D
