I have tried it exactly twice. Once, I had only two items. Each time, there was an error that required someone to come over and take care of it. So I am not doing it again. If I have to order all of my food online, I'll do that before I'll use a self-checkout.

Since the wages of a cashier are built in to the cost of the products purchased, then there should be a discount for going through the mayhem of the self checkout system.

Agree, @Bobby. We only shop twice monthly on average and I only go through a self-check if I have a couple items and nothing to weigh.

I remember back when the first self check out machines were introduced, there was a minimal discount for each item. This gave the user an incentive to do so.

There are some folks who get what is called a 5 finger discount and do indeed go through a sort of self check-out but not one that businesses appreciate very highly.

Trick to the whole process is not to buy any fruit or vegetables not in a pre-priced bag or you'll have to spend too much time flipping through screens. I like self check out because I find it therapeutic to bag my own groceries. I do the same at Home Depot or Lowes.

Me too, Lon. I'm getting quite spoiled by the grocery delivery thing. It probably works out cheaper for me since I am swayed by displays of stuff in the store that I didn't know I "needed" and usually come home with twice as much stuff as was on my list.

Self check makes it easier to inadvertently shoplift as well as deliberately do so. You can accidentally leave stuff in the cart or basket and walk out of the store with it with no intention of doing so. Amazon is trying to develop the "auto checkout" grocery stores supposedly. The rumor is that Bezos is buying some of the defunct Sears stores and converting them into grocery stores with everything tagged with RFID tags. You have to register a credit card or be a Prime member. You then load up your stuff and walk out of the store. You will be scanned and everything will be added to your credit card. No check out at all. I don't know how they will deal with produce and bulk purchases, or perhaps they will not be available.
