Switzerland Has A Stunningly High Rate Of Gun Ownership — Here's Why It Doesn't Have Mass Shootings

Switzerland hasn't had a mass shooting since 2001, when a man stormed the local parliament in Zug, killing 14 people and then himself.

The country has about 2 million privately owned guns in a nation of 8.3 million people. In 2016, the country had 47 attempted homicides with firearms. The country's overall murder rate is near zero.

"Switzerland hasn't taken part in any international armed conflict since 1815, but some Swiss soldiers help with peacekeeping missions around the world."

I think we can safely assume the population number includes children. So about 2 out of 5 adults own a gun.

Is it because the 'types' of guns are restricted ?

 

I don't care what reasons they give. I just think the people there are socially smarter than many of the "people" we have. Also, with their manageable size and ample economic situation, probably less poor and desperate people as well.

Sorry to say it but yes, 'dregs' is the right word. In British and American society, there are just too many people of a certain mind-set. Moral standards have dropped right across the board and society has come to accept the sort of behaviour which would not have been tolerated in the past.

 

All lot of the reason is because that it is a very homogeneous population, in all ways
Vast majority are of the same blood, they do not have the wild disparities in incomes, and their social programs dull the desperation that the under privileged suffer under in most other countries.
Conversely the US was birthed from violence, has a population from all corners of the globe,often with age old regional greivences behind. The US has a winner take all system and if you can't keep up well we would prefer it if you would crawl off and die.
If God forbid you commit a criminal act, we will justifiably jail you. Once you have done your time, we are not done with you. There is no forgiveness in the American system. Your record will keep you in the basement of society for the rest of your life.
If you are black or Hispanic you need to earn your place in society, white privilege does exist, very much so. White Privilege does not necessarily you go to the head of the line or you automatically get the best jobs or the most favorable interest rates. White Privilege is when you walk into a diner,and not every head turns and stares at you,white privilege means your credit card is taken with out a hard glance at your face,white privilege means you can drive any place you want without attracting outsize attention from LEO and the populace.
The US has always had a history of discounting minority value.

I think it's a different situation in Britain. Not so long ago, couples got married before they had children and a husband was responsible for the care of his family. Any unmarried girl who got pregnant was regarded as shameful, and the baby was taken away from her. Then came the welfare state, which allowed these girls to keep their babies, providing them with a home and an allowance. This actually encouraged girls to get pregnant, and the children were raised with the same moral standards as their mothers, and the fathers didn't need to take responsibility for their children.

The population mix in Britain is only recent, and the immigrants have brought their personal grievances with them. The media is reluctant to admit the nationality of many of the criminals, but what is normal behaviour in their own country is against the law here. The lax immigration rules has meant that many people are entering Britain to escape justice in their own country. Instead of making a fresh start, they simply carry on committing the same crimes, but in our country.

It's a complex situation but one which must be addressed, as things will only get worse. We need to do more efficient checks on the people arriving here, and we need to crack down hard on all crime. At the moment, there's a lot of talk but no action.

I was not referring to minorities or people of color. There are plenty of dregs, as @Hal Pollner stated, in every race.

 

Yes there are "dregs" of all colors. Some natural and some custom built by society.
When you are a "dreg" and have nothing but pride, pride is worth dying or killing for.
